On the crosswind issue: I wonder whether the fact that the South West mainline in particular was laid basically along the line of the prevailing wind meant in practice it wasn’t a significant issue - maybe putting the locos on the ECML of WCML that run more at right angles to the prevailing wind would have been more problematic?

(This might be better discussed in the dedicated 35011 thread).

I wish you well. Sadly you will find that the cost of meeting main line specifications - OTMR/TPWS etc - will be eye watering although given the total cost possibly not so intimidating. And then there is the need for air brakes.
Surprised that you believe deflectors are necessary. I can understand design/aesthetic reasons but was unaware of any necessity. Better tell all Class 5 owners. :)

But black fives don't have oversized chimneys that result in lower velocity steam/smoke at the chimney lip - I'm getting that Déjà vu feeling again . . . . nurse I need help!

Please, don't! Draughting and vision impairment are interconnected this time!
    Kind regards

They had the same orifices as the original, the size Jos gave is correct for original and rebuilt. The exhaust was the part which changed fundamentally.

Class 5's have quite a ' sharp' draught, this is particularly evident on the Caprotti ones, so much so that a double chimney was already on the drawing board - perhaps with that on they would have needed smoke deflectors too...

Yes and I apologise for continuing the discussion. As I said, I wish the project well and for an enthusiast/historian it will be good to see a locomotive in air smoothed casing with a number that starts 35xxx. But for anyone interested in steam locomotives in general I really can't see that if it ends up looking like the lovely image you posted in #357 it will have any more public appeal than 34067 or 34072, for example. Express passenger blue - maybe but that's not a draughting matter.

Blue's far more aerodynamic than green. C'mon .... Mallard and XP64 proved that years ago. Why else do you suppose BR went for it big time? o_O

Could you imagine 21C11* crossing Grosvenor Bridge, trailing a rake of Pullmans, complete with Golden Arrow insignia?

*If what I've read is correct, 21C11/35011 was a Nine Elms loco in it's early years and was one which never carried BR 'Express Blue'

Correct, it was one of three MNs to not be painted blue

If you were really keen, you would make it tilt when it goes round curves.

I fear that the timescale for GSN is likely to extend beyond my lifetime. I have controbuted small amounts to several projects but substantial amounts only to projects that have since been completed or that can reasonably be expected to be completed within a few years.
