Correct, the problems due to excessive wear on the original cams in the Lentz gear were solved largely with improved production processes. The essence of the problem, I believe, was the need to regrind the cams after hardening on the original build, a limitation of the production processes of the time. The Americans addressed this issue and the book One Man's Locomotives by Vernon L Smith who worked for Lima Locomotive Works and the Franklin Railway Supply Co and was heavily involved in the production of the Franklin type B gear covers this work. It was persuasive enough for the P2 people to follow up and they were able to obtain the use of material through the late Mr Smith's family to allow for the design of the improved valve gear.

If you look closely, you'll see that the side plates and roof are undrilled so that is definitely new metal. I'm guessing that the tubeplate is also new as it is covered in white marking out paint. The inner throatplate looks to be original as I don't think any of the stay holes are new. As we can't see the door plate no conclusion can be drawn about that part of the firebox. As has been said, Jordan may be able to give a better answer.

There's a blast from the past! I originally made an error with that model, which started out as Merlin, then became Lord Faringdon (with the wrong chimney and livery) then finally, correct for period, Walter K. Whigham. That model is sat quietly in a box awaiting the time I finish my Ganwick Curve layout. Strangely I am now hand painting another A4 in that livery and the paint colour I've had is nowhere near that purple on the Hornby model, being far closer to the blue shade.

On the subject of the P2 - it is an impressive beast, being developed well and is pretty much justifying my original founders investment all those years ago.

It will be very interesting to finally see it at work.

No comment as to the scope of repairs of 60532 available I'm afraid

I thought it was the scope of repairs to "Bittern" that were being referred too?

Indeed: specifically how much of that firebox is new and which boiler it is to be attached to.

Considering I've poured a goodly five figure sum into the P2 I'll be very happy to see my support "in the metal".

Not an update on the P2, but an update showing some very nice artwork which has been displayed on a Rounadbout in Darlington. It looks very good too!

Another News instalment from the P2 Project - The pony truck has been delivered, so it won't be long before we have a 2-8-2, knowing their work-rate!

It seems strange to be commissioning "a Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of the inlet and exhaust steam passages of the cylinder block" when "Design work for the extensively modified and improved cylinder block is complete". Either the design is complete and information from the CFD analysis will be too late to do any good, or the design is not quite complete and there is still scope for minor tweaks to the shapes of the passages.

Edit: I have now read further. There is a clearer explanation further down, so it was just a bit of sloppy drafting of the introductory wording.

Really Simon? Did you write the text? "....rebuilt by his successor Edward Thompson into handsome class A2/2 4-6-2 ‘Pacifics’ in 1943/4 and scrapped by 1961." :)
