Do I recall correctly? Didn't some panniers find their way to the Folkstone Harbour branch (as bankers) quite late on?

Indeed so - apparently the last of the crews bought up on a diet of Stirling R1s were still being counselled well into the 1980s ...

The author may of course have a better quality copy, but if you'd asked me without any priming I think I'd have said it was a Nelson from the size of the boiler, cylinders and the apparently upright deflectors, which would be very plausible at Eastleigh.

    I agree on the Pannier.

It still can't have been quite the culture shock experienced when a couple of 16xx panniers were drafted in to replace superannuated ex-Highland Drummond 0-4-4T's on the Dornoch line in the far north of Scotland .... at least some Southern drivers were aware of the existence of the GW!

The panniers may have been new build but the reality was they were going from one superannuated design to another so they probably wouldn’t have noticed that much.

    Going O/T

BR database has 4692 moving to the SR in 1959. The spotter record has the ex-WR panniers ex-works at Eastleigh in 1962.

Thirteen 5700 Class locos were bought by London Transport (from 1956 to 1963), including six only from 1961 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GWR_5700_Class#London_Transport

Wikipedia suggests that although discussed from 1961 the ex-LT IoW class 485/6 stock was not reserved until 1964 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Underground_Standard_Stock#Isle_of_Wight.

The dates only fit the tale if BR agreed at the outset in ~1961 to swap ~6 more panniers for 43 LT cars, the transfer of which was not agreed until 1964. Possible, but I'm struggling to get the dates to fit?

Armstrong, Dean, Churchward, Collett, Hawksworth panniers superannuated? It's almost as though you were raising accusations of complacency in the GW's design department there. Oh, 'arf a sec...... i'm comitting thread drift. :)

Nice to see big bits of metal being banged about. Fingers crossed it keeps on moving.

Thank you. The Bridgnorth working lads have not been allowed on site during this latest lockdown. Hopefully we are about to move into a happier place where men and machines will be productive once more. The early decision to have some major components machined off site, and 82045s Boiler contract underway has ensured progress has continued to take place - despite everything.

Actually, Howard, to me this is one new build which does not see unduly heavy footed or high in the wheel for its intended use.

Still, I wouldn't fancy one of those forgings landing on my feet ... hot or cold ... and recalling UP4014's restoration, even 6MT 72010 looks lightweight in comparison! :D

I love 82045's updates. They're always greatly appreciated and something to look forward to every month. Thanks, as always, for keeping 'em coming folks.
