This is anticipated to be Eustace's last appearance at the NLR, before she moves on.

The timetable for the gala can be found at: https://www.nlr.org.uk/winter-gala-timetable/

    Photo Competition
We’re looking for the best photos from our Gala, whether it’s steam, diesel or something else. Photos can be of anything related to the Railway, not just the trains themselves.

The winner will receive a free family ticket to the N-LR for any normal running day in 2020, plus their photo will appear in the next issue of our in house magazine ‘Premier Line’, as well as in our other media outlets. There are also 2 runners up prizes of a pair of tickets for two adults for any normal running day in 2020.

Just send your photos to webteam@nlr.org.uk with the subject as 'Photo Competition 2020'

Competition closes at midnight on 23rd Feb 2020. Max 5 photos per entrant.

By entering, each participant is agreeing for their photo(s) to be used by the N-LR in any future publicity or publication for the aims of promoting the N-LR. Acknowledgement of the photographer's work will be given.

Hoping to make my first visit to the line over the weekend - which direction do the Steam Locos face?

'Eustace Forth' has left the NLR
She departed yesterday (13.02.20), bound for Peak Rail.
We've loved having her over the last 8 or 9 months. She performed faultlessly and was a pleasure to both drive and fire.
    Eustace leaving 13.02.20.jpg
This means 'Swanscombe No.4' will now take up the reins as the NLR's sole operational steam loco.

A bit slow to post this but just wanted to put that I had a very enjoyable day at the gala on the Saturday - feel as though it was a railway with a lot of potential and I look forward to hopefully visiting again in the future. Although if the sun is out would be nice to have the steam locos facing South! ;)

Thankyou for raising my attention to it, I also entered the competition.

    News Update
On Wednesday 15th April the NLR took delivery of Greater Anglia Mk3 TSOB 10412, ex-RFM 10203.
The vehicle is now owned by the 'LMS 10000 - The Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society' and is on loan to the NLR.
It will initially be used as the buffet car at Pitsford & Brampton Station. Once the extension is complete at Boughton then the coach will become our new booking office/buffet facility there.

    News Update
On Friday 15th May the NLR took delivery of Greater Anglia Mk3 DVT 82114.
    DVT 1 - Adam Giles.jpg DVT 2 - Adam Giles.jpg DVT 3 - Adam Giles.jpg
The DVT has been purchased by N-LR CIO as part of the ongoing project to increase the number of vehicles for passenger services as well as improving the variety of vehicle types, operational resilience and quality of stock. The funding utilises a legacy donation in memory of Alfred Staden.

The project aims to create a rake of air braked coaches whilst increasing the educational opportunities by preserving Mark 3 vehicles as a way of telling the story of British Rail’s in house coach development alongside the N-LR’s existing Mark 1 & 2 coaches.

The N-LR acknowledges the assistance and opportunities Porterbook have provided to progress the project.
DVT 82114 is to remain in its current Greater Anglia livery, but will be fitted with a generator to provide electrical supplies to the other vehicles in the rake, thus allowing non-ETH/ETS fitted locomotives to haul the rake throughout the year.

Will the DVT be used as a driving vehicle then, or just as a generator car in effect?

I believe it will ultimately be used as a driving vehicle or by a 'motorman'. NLR trains currently run push-pull with a loco on one end and a motorman on the other (either in a guards van or in the converted end compartment of a Mk2 BSOT).

That isn't truly "push-pull" - just propelling as at many other shorter heritage railways. In this case the guard will only have control of the train brakes and a warning device. In true push-pull mode the driver in the auto-trailer/driving trailer will have control of the loco as well.

    Theft at the NLR :(
Over the last couple of weeks we are very sad to report that the NLR has suffered at least 2 incidents of theft of B4 bogie parts.
These include primary suspension parts such as slotted links, friction pads springs, etc. coupled with brake beams, hangers, brake blocks and secondary suspension parts.

We are still assessing the extent of this ongoing theft because since it was discovered last weekend more have gone this week avoiding extra security that has been put in place.

Due to the amount of work involved in removing these parts and a need of a car or van to remove them these, we believe they are being stolen to order.

Any information such as items being offered for sale or items appearing at another railway with no history attached would assist us in our search for the offenders. Please email webteam@nlr.org.uk if you can provide any information.

This is of course a huge set back for our hard-working volunteers in what is already an extremely challenging year. If you wish to help, you can either:

    Bridge 11 update
Sorry for the lack of news on the extension (and everything else) recently. Covid-19 restrictions means progress has slowed somewhat.
However, some good news is that this weekend (3rd/4th Oct) we were joined by Tempo PCE to undertake some of the grout injection to the delaminated brickwork under the arches of Bridge 11. Despite the weather doing its best to put us off (!), we managed to grout 5-and-a-half out of the 7 arches! There will be a final day on this at the end of October to finish a key stage in the restoration of this bridge.
The final job will then be the insertion of a number of helical bars to stitch it all together (plus a bit of pointing on the external faces). So the end of this mammoth restoration is now in sight!
    03.10.20 - grout injection.jpg

    Boughton Sidings
Additional track has been laid at Boughton recently to provide a second siding for the storage of rolling stock. In time, these sidings will be enclosed by security fence to provide a secure compound.

Shocking news re the theft - it does seem so specific....it is really upsetting to think that it may be that it is somebody within our heritage railway "family".....

Has anyone working here got a recent photo of the Shark 993748 please? I know its listed as underframe only in the wagon databases. Called in a couple of weeks ago and couldn't see it on the southern end of the line.

    Boughton Extension Update
There has been steady progress on a number of fronts since we last updated you in October.

Bridge 11 - the grouting was successfully completed.

Boughton Sidings - new security fencing has been installed around the sidings, including a smart pair of gates across the tracks (see photo)
    36. security gates 15.11.20-min - Copy.jpg

Boughton Station - We have finally secured a lease for additional land from the pub next door (The Windhover). This has allowed the construction of a bay platform which will accommodate a Mk3 buffet coach acting as temporary booking office and shop, etc. until a permanent building is erected in future. Work started on this in late Nov and latest progress is shown in the photo below. We now have built up behind the platform wall with earth to give a finished platform the equivalent of just over two coach lengths at the south end of the platform.

    Boughton Extension Update
There there continues to be steady and positive progress on a number of fronts since January.

Last weekend the track was laid into the bay platform. The blockwork for the bay platform wall is nearly completed and a start has been made on the facing brickwork.
The fencing has been completed and the land cleared of all unwanted vegetation.

Good to see that progress is being maintained and, getting that much closer to Northampton, must make it easier to get some more volunteers?
