Quite agree Allegheny. After all there are 4 A4s still with us here in the UK. So it would be possible to turn one out in LNER Green and another in the original two tone Grey. Granted none of the surviving locos ran in either of those liveries...... I well remember seeing Bittern at North Tyneside when she was turned out in two tone Grey as Silver Link for Mallards 5oth anniversary celebrations of her record run. No wonder folk were so surprised......

As far as I can see there are three liveries for A4s not yet applied:
    • LNER green (with or without the swept black portion)
    • Wartime Black (LNER/NE)
    • British Railways Experimental 'Purple'.
Any of those would be a welcome change; although derided, according to Yeadon 4498 kept its stainless steel 'LNER' letters whilst in black which I think would look rather striking.

I do believe a certain A3 briefly wore black whilst at the NRM and carried its Thompson number.

2/8/12. You can number it as 4468 or 22,as you see fit. Alas I did not see it alongside 502/103 when both were in black. A month later 4468 had been repainted when it was in the workshop with the A3

If this forum is correct, Union of South Africa ran in LNER green

They are only allowed a working party of 4, so work has slowed down, at one point 16 were working on her evidently, think @torgormaig can probably help, as he has been involved.

Costs for H&S, Cleaning and PPE equipment run at £200 a week, according to a recent post on FB.

And as others have said, the mantra is now, it will be ready when its ready, with the Tier4 restrictions coming, that will no doubt slip further as the NRM is closed again.

The livery debate, comes down to a vote of members, they voted to stay with BR blue, and you have to respect that.

Going through Yeadon's A4 book, 4488 (Osprey for all of two months then UoSA) went into traffic in Garter Blue as it was set aside to run the newly-inaugurated Coronation service. 4482 to 4487 were outshopped in LNER Green. What Yeadon isn't definitive about is if it was in green as Osprey - the colour scheme appendix suggests it wasn't.

This is my understanding of the current state of affairs. I have stepped back from involvement for the time being as with limited numbers being allowed in each day there are plenty of others with greater skills who can be of more practicle use. I hope to be back when more are allowed into the workshop.

That's all an interesting read :)

Of particular interest was the retention toilet tank - I'm not up on developments on that front but has a way been found to retrofit Mk. 1s with them because previously I thought it was a major issue?

I think the only major issues are those of cost and time., not only to fit them but to provide facilities for emptying them.

The NYMR has already completed its first one (of a dozen or so that are being funded by Network Rail, I believe).

I think BR Blue has come to be seen as SNG's 'colour', the one she is known to carry. While I agree that I would love to see an A4 in Apple Green, just as a change, there does seem to be something 'right' about number 7 in BR Blue.

Absolutely, I think BR Blue gives No7 a bit of a USP, to see it out and about on a rake of ‘blood and custard’ stock is certainly something to look forward to.

I didn't realise it only carried that blue for 18 months whilst in BR service.

Still, at least it's not BR green!!

I think Bittern will be the most likely A4 to be a victim of livery experimentation.
