Whilst good news that a home has been found, the problem is that it is temporary. The removal costs need to be found to move to the Mid Hants, then removal costs found again to move to a permanent home.

Hopefully it could become more permanent.

I would be careful with such assertions, not least in case you give offence to either MHR or S&DRT. The recent (was it only a couple of weeks ago) notification of the arrangements for 53808 was one of the more positive items that I've seen lately from the WSR, and suggests significant progress in rebuilding trust.

We should be willing to assume that the deal was entered into in good faith by WSR and S&DRT, while being watchful that it is upheld.

I wonder whereabouts on the MHR ?

It's good news in a way, but the implication is that there may well be a further move later, which will mean even more expense. If only they could give the bill to the Plc .......but would the latter be able to pay it without bankrupting the railway completely?

Oh dear, what a mess, and all so avoidable

The release says part of the collection, I wonder how much will go to the Mid Hants and wonder what will happen with the rest? Hopefully we will hear more good news before to long.

Indeed, and mostly looking in good condition. An instant second demonstration goods train for the MHR. Including some LSWR stock to use with 499 once complete!

I would imagine anything runnable would be easiest to store, because it is, well able to be moved, but anything needing restoration, or not able to be moved will be more probmatic, whilst the MHR has recently increased its siding space, not everything will be able to be accommodated S&D relics , depending on their nature and size again, its a matter of where can we put what, Is the former goods shed at Medstead owned by the railway, the one next to the station building, if it was, or could be rented, could a small museum for the S&D TRUST be sited there?

How much storage space is there at Eastleigh? Hopefully anything that can not be at the MHR can go to a secure, dry location.

not much I would think, but one possibility could be an empty warehouse if available for a peppercorn rent, that could be rented jointly by MHR & S&D to store vehicles and relics off site, to free up space on the railway , that way, both parties share the cost, and it could free up space and the items would be secure.

I also hope that it could become permanent, if a way could be found to acquire a building, somewhere on the line to house the collection of items, and of course, nothing would please the trust more than seeing 53808 at the head of a long freight made up of not just its own vehicles but MHR wagons also,

Potentially some could be sold to help fund the move. Not necessarily a bad thing. Some of the collection has no S&D connection, but has been obtained simply because of its usefulness. Industrial diesel shutters and the BG for example. This wouldn’t all necessarily be needed, depending where the new home is ultimately going to be.

Its a shame the collection is, albiet temporarily leaving somerset and dorset counties. Its a shame the Swanage dont have the useage of the furzebrook sidings space. Would have been more than enough space for part or all of the collection.

It is a interesting piece of news but not surprising, will point out that most of the wagons on the stock list are not even through piped and if they where to run on the MHR beyond storage they likely need through pipes as a minimum. But it be interesting what moves to the line

Or the other option is to extend back to Basingstoke ;)

I think Swanage have plenty of plans for the Furzebrook sidings once they get their hands on them. I wouldn’t count on there being enough space.

Perhaps one of the S&D preservation schemes remains the likely ultimate destination, once they have expanded sufficiently to accommodate the SDRT. But for now, well done to the MHR for stepping in to help.
