Sooooo.....back to the original question, do you agree that there is inconsistency with respect to the information presented?

That would be my assumption, yes. To the casual observer, it looks like the Peall Trust have given WSSRT £15,000, and the WSSRT have decided, quite legitimately we assume, to pass on half of that to the PLC's "Infrastructure appeal for heritage track components for this winter's work programme' (that is exactly what the press release says, woe betide anybody should get picked up on such details!)

If the expectation is that people on here, who are pointing out the bleeding obvious, should provide the answers to everything, then what is the point in the plc board?
What is the point in the WSSRT & WSRA etc?
What is the point of anyone involved at the WSR?

Why don't you ask the plc board what p/way works are required?
They could probably give you a nice gantt chart.

    >>>...... the Peall Railway Trust has donated £15,000 to the WSSRT, and .....WSSRT Trustees have agreed to contribute half this sum to the WSR Infrastructure appeal.....
    1/2 of £15000 = £7500

    >>>>The balance of £7,500 will be used to form part of the Trust's contribution to the Gauge Museum project......

So, £7500 to the Infrastructure appeal and £7500 to the Gauge Museum. So, all £15000 accounted for. But....

    >>>...with the remainder going to purchase covers to protect heritage carriages..

..so, what is this mythical 'remainder' then ?

I think that’s probably a question best posed to one of those 50,000 ‘new’ nurses we were told about at the time of the last General Election.

The last few pages throw another issue into clear focus, and that is the mixed messages and "bits of stories" which seem to emanate from the various WSR family members and individual volunteers etc, which only serve to confuse and increase speculation.

    Such as:

    * No one single clear message about funding targets, or amounts raised towards these targets

    * No clear information about what work prevents reopening and how long it might take to complete them (and related issues such as staff and skills shortages)

    * No clear roadmap of the route and timescale to opening.

Some might say it's none of our business, but by not being clear, all that happens is that it alienates prospective supporters and donors, so IMHO it is an essential need.

None of this is meant to denigrate Steve Edge's excellent site, but he only has whatever news he is given or hears about. His site would be an ideal mouthpiece for releasing such news, if only the WSR (plc in particular) would release it.

OK - the bleeding obvious is that qualified people are needed to do certain tasks. The WSR had those people but at the moment they don't. No need for a gantt chart. This has been stated in the latest newsletter (p2) which, as an avid WSR follower, I'm sure you have read. I hope that helps.

You are assuming the vol guys have the necessary certificates for certain tasks. They don't. This can be sorted in time but I'm sure you'll agree the paperwork needs to be done and done correctly. Now furlough is ending for some staff (partially for some) I would hope and expect some progress can now be made.

At Doniford, the vols have been out doing with shovels what should be done with a machine. It takes a lot longer. I guess at least a start is being made and hats off to those vols for doing that hard work.

No. Both items are clear. The earlier one quotes the donor as providing the cash "at this difficult time" (ie the emergency) and the second one merely states that, due to the donation, the Railway is £15K better off. What is not to like?

It could be, for example, that the person with the training and certificate to operate the weed killing vehicle may have left. It just takes one in a key role and everything can stop.

The way I read the news item published by the Plc on the 20th July, it conveys the impression that all the donations to the three groups are being aggregated together into one lump sum and the representation is being given that it's all for the Emergency Appeal.

But that's not the actual case is it? There's at least ~£9000 in that overall figure that's not for the Emergency Appeal. (£7500 for the Gauge Museum and £1500+ for the DMU).

That's how I read it. Other's views may differ. If I have read it incorrectly, there's a lesson for the author of the article to write clearly and unambiguously.

responsibilities of leavers though should be handed over to others . Where I work even for those on furlough we made sure that the business could continue , and that key responsibilities were covered . If that hasn't happened in the case of minehead then once again you have to question those making these decisions

Well nevermind then. I give up trying to explain why I think there is an inconsistency. Not enough hours in the day if people can't see the problem. Not enough brick walls to bang head against. "Nothing to see here, move on....."

Boy, do some folk on here really like the 'dog with a bone' approach.

The newsletter I read said that some key staff have left taking with them competencies and certificates of operation that others do not have. So some work has stopped.

    The questions to ask are:
Out of the employed staff who were furloughed, which people were in key roles because of their skills, competences and certification necessary to continue with preparing the railway for operation?
Were these people reassured that they would not be made redundant (because of their skills)?
Was this a cost that the PLC could handle?

All the above is confidential work. You have to assume that it, or something similar, was done.
