You wait weeks, nay months, for an update, and then two come along in rapid succession!

"Following on from the good session on Monday, Palvan B778810 has received more attention. By the close of play the chassis on one side and both bufferbeams were in black paint and half of one side was sanded and primed.

This van was last in traffic about six years ago and so is in relatively good condition. The major work will be a new roof and new doors on the south side."

And the guys have been at it again! (Sadly, we haven't been able to make it across for a combination of work and health reasons, but we'll get there eventually).

"Another day of achievements.....we were joined by Graham Batho, who was at a loose end, and he and Phil finished painting the chassis of Palvan B778810.

Steve concentrated on sanding down Brake Van B954024 and by the close of play had primed one end. It's so great to see some visible progress after spending a lot of time fixing a large number of small issues with this vehicle.

Whilst all this was going on, Tim was making body repairs to both vehicles, which involved a new section of hardwood for the Brake Van frames, filling screw holes, and repairing damage to the ply of the Palvan.

As a slight distraction, Tim also cleaned up and painted a Milk Churn which was donated to our wagon museum space (coming soon). The milk churn features the letters 'ALLEN & HANBURYS LTD' on one side and 'WARE LNER' on the other. A very nice item and well worth saving!"

There was a little job that wasn't quite finished yesterday and it was keeping Tim awake last night, so today he put in a few hours to finish body repairs to three lower panels on Palvan B778810 and then primed them.

I don't think I've ever had so many updates to report in such a short timespan :)

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1340592716130699

    "More great progress today.....
Whilst Phil and Graham worked on the underside of Palvan B778810, Clifford sanded back another few panels on the body.
Meanwhile, next to the Palvan, Tim was fitting windows to Brake Van B954024.
By the close of play one end of the Brake Van was ready for some paint and the sanded side of the Palvan was painted in primer."

A bit of wagon shunting yesterday, I believe there has been more painting on the brake van today, and there is another work session planned for tomorrow! WagonShunting.jpg

And a further update on efforts from yesterday and today:

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1343578669165437

"Steve did a bit more priming on Brake Van B954024 yesterday afternoon and the east end is looking great.
Today Tim finished installing the windows in the west end of the Brake Van and filled all that needed filling.
Meanwhile, Phil and Graham were finishing painting the underframe of Palvan B778810. By close of play Tim couldn't resist putting a bit of undercoat on the bodyside."

Unfortunately, today's update is not so good:

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1345541278969176

    SAD NEWS!

Unfortunately during the night some scumbags have removed and stolen the wagon tarpaulin from Shoc Open B721890.

The Wagon was in the Bay Platform at Peterborough Nene Valley Station and the ropes were all untied rather than cut, so obviously removed for a purpose. This tarpaulin is heavy and would've taken two to get it.

Lettered with the running number 120223 and BR. If anyone finds it please return it to us.

Yeah - it had been our intention not to leave it on the wagon when stabled out of use, but sadly that didn't happen, it got left on after the Swindon 70 freight demos back in March, and now it's gone :(

We know people have been in before - last freight driving experience we had to re-fasten it as someone had clearly undone the ropes at one end to go inside - although not clear whether to see if there was anything worth pinching or to use it as somewhere to shelter/sleep.

Unfortunately PNVR receives many uninvited visitors, although often it's just gatherings of youths leaving litter behind, and the CCTV rarely provides anything useful for ID.

FB Update from Tim having reviewed the CCTV :(

"Thank you for all the kind comments folks. Cctv has been checked and it would appear that some local homeless have removed the Tarpaulin and cut it on site into pieces and all taken a bit. Cctv at 0330hrs showed torches at the end of the Platform near the wagon and a male later walks under the camera with a folded piece of Tarpaulin.

Very very sad that we will have to replace this item. The wagons will in future be relocated further west out of the city.

Nothing is sacred, nothing is safe, but we will carry on restoration of wagons regardless. If anyone would like to help financially to replace this Tarpaulin I think it was about £300 at the time, but more now I'd guess. Drop us a message and thanks to all for your support. "

    Arse!

    Faith in humanity restored....

Amazingly, someone has offered to fund complete replacement of the tarpaulin. We are overwhelmed by such generosity! We have also been asked about making donations towards the replacement, although as things now stand, any donations will be used for wagon restoration given that the tarpaulin is now covered.

Online donations can be made here: https://www.gofundme.com/nvrwagons

Cheques can be made out to "Nene Valley Railway" and sent to the following address. Please write "Wagon Group" on the back :)

Nene Valley Railway, Wansford Station, Old Great North Road, Stibbington PE8 6LR

If you prefer to donate via bank transfer, PM me and I will supply details of the Wagon Group account...

    The updates just keep coming....

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1351727065017264

"It was mainly a Brake Van kind of a day yesterday on B954024.....
Graham was cleaning up the handrails, whilst Phil worked on the Duckets. On the north side Tim was completing the last body repairs by cutting in hardwood sections to the upright pillars. Steve then carried on with a second coat of primer on the West End. I think it's safe to say we're on the home stretch now with the Brake Van, although a few jobs remaining.
Whilst all of this was going on, Clifford continued to sand the Palvan B778810.
A good day was had by all and plenty of progress."

Earlier in the week, Tim sanded more of the brake van while Jon, Phil & Graham made a start on replacing the floor in B775176, recently brought in to Wansford yard for our attention. One wheel set is marginal, so we may need to swap it before it can join the demo rake in the future.

Graham & Cliff on the vans; Phil on the duckets; Brake van in it's prime(r); B775176; Now you see it; Now you don't x 2; I'm still sanding, yeah, yeah, yeah!

"Yesterday Tim sanded the North Side of Brake Van B954024, whilst Phil sanded and painted the duckets, and Graham cleaned and painted some of the handrails.
Today Steve painted the North Side of the Brake Van in primer. This now sees the whole body in primer with all structural repairs complete."

Great news re replacement tarpaulin.....that sort of generosity goes a long way to restore our faith in humanity. The scum bags are outnumbered by the good!
And well done on the brake van.

Stuff from Saturday, yesterday and today....

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1358093924380578

"On Saturday Phil and Graham continued work on the handrails of the Brake Van, whilst Steve undercoated and Tim made a hardwood cover for one of the veranda brackets. Meanwhile, Clifford was sanding more of the Palvan and a little bit of primer went on.
Today (Monday) Tim started to refit the Duckets whilst Phil did a bit more undercoating."

"A little bit of homework for Tim today.
He has burnt into a Brake Stick and Shunters Pole the running number of the Brake Van and given them a coat of varnish. Not an everyday sight on the washing line, but essential equipment for the Brake Van!"

Now we're really on the home stretch...

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1362368680619769

    "Another bit of progress yesterday.
Phil and Graham worked the early shift painting more undercoat, whilst Tim was organising things on the Platform for the NVR running trains again and Steve was maintaining diesels.
Then, Tim fitted the ducket surround and Steve carried on with some more undercoat. We had to change undercoat half way through the job and it's a bit darker than the first lot. Next Saturday the other ducket surround will be fitted and that's the body complete!"

Almost done...although sadly, having intended to be there this weekend to help out, car issues meant we still haven't made it up to NVR since the start of lockdown :(

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1390579677798669

    "THE BIG REVEAL!
There hasn't been an update for a while, but there has been plenty going on as focus has been firmly on completing Brake Van B954024.
We can now reveal, though you might have guessed, the Brake Van is being turned out in BR unfitted Grey.
Most of the body is now in topcoat and it's now down to final fixtures and fittings. Today Tim removed the old chequer plate on the entrances which had old cutouts in it where platework had been holding the body together. Now that the body has been repaired and the plates removed the old chequer plate looked unsightly, so new pieces were fitted.
The restoration of this vehicle has been extensive, but should see it last a bit longer in traffic.
There's still a little bit to do, but not long now!
Also....following a Shunt in the shed both the Brake Van, Palvan, and our next restoration project can be seen in the same shot."
