I have just taken a telephone call from a gentleman wanting to come to the Stalybridge enthusiasts night - tonight - Thursday 8th January

I have advised him that - like so much else found on the pages that flow out of Peterborough, and written about on this forum - that this is incorrect information and that our get togethers are on the second Tuesday of every month - i.e. - 13th Jan et seq

All are welcome - bring yourself, some pictures, video, whatever, money for a pint - and a sense of humour!

    See you there people!

It did make a good excuse to trot by for a pint and then up to Colin's for a curry though!

Always make the best of every opportunity

I hadn't spotted that one, Frank, but then again, I have transferred my allegiance from Peterborough to the eminently superior Horncastle stable and nowadays only briefly browse the 'also-rans' in Mr Smug's Reading Room!

So, just in case there is still any doubt..........

Didn't realise they still brewed Boddingtons. Like Burton Ale it use to be everywhere... Just checked GBG and it is now brewed by Hydes so at least it still comes from Manchester if not Strangeways Brewery.

Next time I am in the area I will try to make a meeting!

    IRWELL VALE RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHERS

To paraphrase some other websites (that shall remain anonymous) ……”Persons who attended Stalybridge were also interested in the following” ………..

    IRWELL VALE RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHERS

The 15th season of railway presentations, held monthly in one of the most idyllic parts of Rossendale has, during the course of the past few months, already included guest appearances by such celebrated photographers as Gavin Morrison and Peter Fitton, these setting a standard of excellence that seems likely to continue for the remainder of the programme.

    Saturday 17th January 2009 - “Steam Miscellany”.
Immediately following the end of a year that commemorated the 40th anniversary of the very end of BR steam in no uncertain fashion, we are now to be treated to some of the colour and B&W work, taken during far happier times, from the well-known photographer, the late Eric Bentley. This show is presented by Barry Atkinson

Saturday 14th February 2009 - “Shed Bashing in the 1960s” by Arthur J Hall.
Remember the early 1960s and all those shed visits, often travelling overnight, by coach to far-flung outposts of the network, that filled the advert pages of all the magazines of the period? Arthur was one organiser of such tours and, during his excursions, he took many photographs. Tonight’s show encompasses visit made to various Southern and London Midland Region depots.

Saturday 14th March 2009 “The End of an Era” by John Leck.
John advises that this show will be the very last one that he will present. Treats in store for such a special occasion will include high-quality medium-format scenes from the USA, South Africa and, of course, the UK.

The venue is the Irwell Vale Village Church, which is situated a mere 2 minutes walk from the car park of Irwell Vale Station on the East Lancs Railway.
(For those that have not visited before, Irwell Vale is situated about 1km from the B6257 Edenfield to Haslingden Road - a clearly sign-posted left turn located a few yards after passing over the ELR over-bridge.)

All are welcome and the admission charge of £3.00 does also include entry to a raffle, as well as a cup of tea or coffee upon arrival and, for a further £2.00, pie and peas will be provided by the ladies from the Church, during the interval.

All events commence at 7-30pm prompt, but doors will be open from 7-00pm with the tea-room serving refreshments.

Thanks to Delph Donkey on this site and to 23E on another for posting info in the Irwell Vale slide shows. As I organise these shows any publicity is welcome as all profits made from the entrance fee, raffle etc go towards the upkeep of the Irwell Vale Chuch and have been doing so for the last fifteen or so years since we started here.

Can I thow out an open invitation to any of the Steam Railway Magazine staff, editors co editors etc, to put a show on at Irwell Vale next year about working for the magazine the trials and tribulations of such, accompanied by slides. ??
Now you may think that you may be walking into a red hot frying pan by accepting this offer and yes you will hopefully get some questions from the audience (hopefully) during the show, but I can assure you of a very warm northern reception if any one out there in Steam Railway Magazine land wants to take this challenge on.
It will be a good PR excercise for you and you could even have a follow up article in the magazine whn you can say anything you like about your reception 'Oop North'.

The date would be on a Saturday night in either October, November or December 2009 or January, February or March in 2010. So ehilst you are up here cobine it with a visit to the ELR behind the scenes look at the railway, I'm sure they will help here....
So there you have it Steam Railway reporters, I'm doing your job for you... all I need now is a month in next season shows that you can come along....

    OVER TO YOU STEAM RAILWAY>>>>>

    Re: IRWELL VALE RAILWAY PHOTOGRAPHERS

Is there any scope that there could be either a section, or even better a calendar on this forum where such meetings could be advertised etc?

There is the Galas and Events section where most things of this nature are publicised, however if you have a suggestion then I'm sure Glyn would be interested to hear from you (any of you)
