I would have thought that the Cl4 engine would be the preferred one. At the 25mph speed limit it can haul as many coaches as a Cl5 needs to on a preserved line (say seven tops) and with the smaller grate it should be more economical.

I too am surprised that there is such a lack of activity in overhauling the out-of-service examples, particularly when they are just pushed into a siding and left to rot post boiler ticket expiry. Perhaps there is a need to revive the Midland Railway's 'Society For The Protection Of Small Engines'!

    :-k :-k

Looking at the list given below - one running, two under overhaul, and one due to enter workshop soon - I'd hardly call that a lack of activity.

Doesn't really answer how it's favourable to a standard 4, 75079 could blow it out the water for reliability for all we currently know.

Is that why it's now on light duties, then? Lack of maintenance? :-k

Does anyone know if any of the preserved 75xxx has a Swindon built chimney. I know 75079 has an Eastleigh built chimney. But I’m not sure about the rest of the preserved 75xxx.

    Thanks

73096 status has nothing to do with lack of maintenance. She had thinish tyres at last overhaul and now needs new ones ideally. She has run a LOT of miles without any trouble. Should be back to full health next year.

Optomistic for what? 75069, 2857, or both? Time frames should be taken with a pinch of salt anyway - its obvious that with so many variables at play that things will nearly always end up taking longer than anticipated. The good thing from where I see it though is that 75069 will be under overhaul in the near future destined for a long overdue second stint, and before then there will be 2857 back with us.

According to the RCTS book, all the 75xxx double chimneys were produced at Swindon. The initial experimental type was fabricated and appeared on the prototype 75029. But the final production version was a standard design from Brighton which was the lead design office for the Class. These chimneys were all cast at Swindon and fitted to both WR and SR engines at Swindon or Eastleigh. I believe that all 75xxx including 75029 eventually received the production version.

    When does 75029 ticket expire?

Also I am I right as to which type of tenders they have / are going to receive ?

    027 / 029 / 014 have the smaller IIRC
    069 / 078 / 079 have the larger version?

Plus one last thing, is 029 the only double chimney version?

As far as I am aware 75029, 75078, 75079 and 75069 all have double chimneys. 75027, 75029 and 75014 are the only members to have the smaller BR2 type tenders which hold six tons of coal and 3,500 Gallons of water. The rest have BR 1B types which hold 4,725 Gallons and seven tons of coal.

On a similar note, I believe No.75014 is the only surviving member to still retain the early style fluted coupling rods. Most Std locomotives had these replaced with the later plain style variety after excessive stress have been found in the early style rods.

Optimistic for timescales in my view. The 75 hasn't even been stripped down yet, and until then the full extent of work required won't be fully known.
The 28 needs both the engine and tender up on the jacks which are currently occupied by 46443, with 34027 also wanting to get up on them at some point. I'm sure that the 2857 team will be more concerned about doing everything properly (as they have been so far), rather than throwing it all together in time for an imaginary september deadline.

Just a slight correction to lil bear's list. The tenders are BR2A not BR2.

Unless a certain individual says "No" very firmly there may well be a lot of politics around 34027. Perhaps, just perhaps, an individual with a big pocket book has too much influence in certain places?
