Does anybody on here have the RAL colour code for B.R. maroon paint ?

We would like to stop buying paint from various sources, and standardise.

    Thanks,
    Bob.

Hi Bob, one of the foremost model painters, Warren Haywood, reckons RAL 3005 is the correct one for B.R. maroon - and I'd believe him as I've seen his work.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

British Rail never used German military RAL colours, preferring instead to use British colours. The marroon colour used was BS 381C 452 Dark Crimson.

    Hi Martin,

I'm like you, I use BS 381C paints. I get mine from Tor Paints. They are based in Birtley.

RAL is an European color matching system which defines colors for paint, coatings and plastics. The RAL color standard is administrated by the RAL Deutsches Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung. 'RAL' is the abbreviation of 'Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung'. This name can be translated in English as 'National Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance'.

In 1927 the German RAL organization invented a collection of 40 colors. Prior to that date manufacturers and customers had to exchange color samples to describe a tint, whereas from then on they would rely on numbers. With tints constantly added to the collection, the collection was revised in 1961. From that moment the color system consists of 213 colors, which is still in use to this day.

I wouldn't know but I would have thought the Bundeswehr would use paint from this chart.
