There's a 5 mph TSR on the stretch south of Hampton Loade where 75069 met with the tree last year, although I don't know if that's a result of Dennis or other problems. Otherwise things ran normally today. The river is well up with a number of riverside roads and properties flooded, as you might imagine.

That TSR was put in place in late January, so is not Storm Dennis-related

The Gwili Railway on Facebook have announced that the RSH-built 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST Welsh Guardsman is moving to the SVR. How long has it been since the SVR last had an 'Austerity' saddle tank?

Since 193 left? Why would the SVR want an austerity 0-6-0? Seems a little strange. Or is it just visiting?

Welsh Guardsman arrived at Bridgnorth this morning on a low-loader. I gather that it is taking up residency for an extended period.

With 1450 on restricted duties, and 813 the only other "small" locos seems an ideal loco for the lighter services that could also bail them out in an emergency.

    1501 and 7714?

813 spent much of last year on other railways.

Short boiler extension but restricted steamings, have a look in the loco notes in January's newsletter for fuller detail

Some background from the SVR: "We have agreed to host Welsh Guardsman while the owner decides on the operating opportunities for the loco during the 2020 season. Bridgnorth Locomotive Works will undertake some examination and maintenance work and we will potentially have the chance to use the locomotive if we decide to."

It is worth remembering that 193 always had a 6 Mk 1 load whenever I saw it, so Welsh Guardsman, assuming its in good nick, should be of considerable use to the SVR.

I would suggest the missing sandboxes and associated bits should be reinstated, if only for getting out of Highley.

it is also worth remembering that an Austerity is generally regarded as 4MT equivalent hence being a valuable asset to an operating railway; for the SVR good for either shuttle or freight duties.

Also worth mentioning that 193 left before we opened to Kidderminster. However if I read it right, an Austerity has the same water capacity as a Pannier (1,200 gallons) and a slightly higher tractive effort (23,870 lbf v 22,515 lbf). On the downside it has a significantly lower coal capacity (2.3t v 3.4t). At face value it should therefore presumably be capable of the same sort of loadings as a Pannier over the full line, but might need to take coal more often?

193 did not have a good reputation at all, although it was regarded as somewhat of a rogue amongst its class. I had one trip when we only ran as far as Bewdley where we ran out of water at Northwood, thankfully with a well topped up boiler. It was somewhat of a relief to get the bag in at Bewdley.

Perhaps more pertinent is the slightly larger grate and firebox in the Hunslet. Against that is the short wheelbase; we used to call 196 'Puddlejumper' because of it's gait when viewed from ahead.

Our crews have been observing the differences between an austerity and a pannier; interesting that on the latter the firebox floor is lower as on the Austerity the firebox is above the rear axle whereas on the pannier it is in between the two axles. Whether this makes a difference in steaming I have no idea but I would suggest that the biggest issue for an Austerity on the SVR would be water capacity. Nothing wrong with the TE or power.
