    Hi.

I'm new on the forum, though I've been a visitor a lot in the past, and came across this thread as I did a search on Exhaust Steam Injectors. I am building a highly accurate 5" gauge scale model of Evening Star, to works drawings (all 650 of them). One major problem I have is the Davies & Metcalfe Exhaust Steam Injector. There is no scale model of this injector made. Is there anyone on the forum who might have access to the drawing for the main casting of the D & M Exhaust Injector as used on all Class 7, 8 and 9f locos? Any help would be greatly
appreciated, so that I can go about making a pattern to get one cast.

    Bob.

I’m no modeller, but if you’re building a live steam loco, and want a working exhaust steam injector, there’s a large number of components that fit into the body. Firstly wouldn’t it be easier to machine the body from brass bar? And secondly could it be made as a live steam injector internally to reduce the complexity? Plse ignore if you are after total authenticity!

The attached is of a class J from a D&M booklet. No dimensions but presumably to scale. There is a note on https://www.dukeofgloucester.co.uk/?section=locomotive&page=Exhaust+Steam+Injector about how they made a new Class K injector for 71000. For a suitable donation, they may share the drawing.

Somewhere I have the book for the class K injector. If you the sectional view scanning I can look it out in a week or 2. have you tried Adam Cro for this item?
I suspect a working exhaust injector will be very difficult to achieve in this scale.

    Hi guys.

Thanks for those offers. I have the book and have scanned the diagram into Autocad and stretched it to full-scale size. My problem is the sections of the body casting. There are none included in the book that I have. I knew that a new exhaust steam injector had been made for Duke of Gloucester, and that they do have a full set of drawings. I did contact them about getting hold of a copy of the main casting drawing but I never got an answer, even though I had offered to pay any expenses incurred. I sent it to a general address rather than a particular person, because I have no idea who the best person would be, to contact. I've also been in contact with D & M but no luck there either. I'm not trying to make an actual working example because I'm sure it wouldn't work in so small a size as Sheff says. What I want to do is make an injector body with the correct outline but fit live steam injector internals. I am in contact with Adam Cro. He will supply the casting if, between us, we can get the necessary info to produce a pattern.

    Hi.

I have a book that has the longitudinal section in it but neither Adam Cro or I have been able to find cross-sectional drawings of the main casting. If your book has them, that would be a massive help!!

    Hi.

Thanks for that. The J Type is a slightly different shape to the Type K. I have the Type K book that corresponds to your Type J book, but it doesn't have any cross sectional drawings to show the shape of the casting, unfortunately. I did try contacting the Duke of Gloucester people. Even though I offered to cover any expenses incurred, I have never had a reply. Unfortunately I didn't have the name of a specific person to write to, so my letter probably got binned.

I think I think I am correct in recalling that a live steam injector was made for Tornado and that brand
new it worked very well in the original trials on the Great Central - switching automatically to live steam
from exhaust steam when the regulator shut and this was not something the trials people were used to.

Have any exhaust steam injectors been made or given a thorough repair since?

Duke of Gloucester had a new D & M Type K exhaust steam injector made and fitted, and the Trust has a set of working drawings. Unfortunately I have not been able to make contact with anyone who can help. My letters and emails never get a reply.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that the new K injector was actually made by Davies and Metcalfe for the 71000 Trust. A 'K' is quite a lot different to a J and is not something which can be derived from J drawings. There have been other injectors made in the preservation era, we made a Great Western type J for 6023 at Tyseley some years ago when the patterns still existed at Swindon and castings were obtainable, but again that is nothing like a K.

Bob, it runs in my mind that when the 71000 Trust came to have the Class K injector made a full set of drawings was not available and they had to work out the missing information from first principles. The patterns and castings were made by a Sheffield foundry (Brassfounders?) They used to have a photo of all the parts in their reception. I saw the photo when I had to go there on business. I'm sure that all this was related in the railway mags at the time. A long time ago now, though, and I'm open to correction.
    Edit: Found this: https://www.brassfounders.com/products/engineering-castings

    Hi
Would anyone on this thread have an electronic copy of the D&M K class handbook as produced by Davies and Metcalfe or a copy that they would be willing to scan?

Thanks in advance for any assistance it is appreciated
