Looking at the picture, it would seem that the cylinder block has had material from 9 studs broken away at the end of the casting. I'm sure the EMF will be investigating whether the repair could be made by building up with welding. In which case the repair could be a lot less costly both in time and finance......here's hoping.
It certainly is a salutary picture demonstrating the forces involved in the motion parts of steam locomotives.

I don't really like to speculate but perhaps it would be acceptable to use longer studs extending deeper than the damage in which case building up with weld may well be quite practicable.

Indeed, no one would be able to glean this much info from that photo. We can only suspect that Aberdare has been using his privileged position as a driver on the WSR to have a snoop when no-one was looking and presumably ignore any company embargo on the disclosure of information. He needs to keep an eye out for the company thought police.

I suggest that Aberdare’s post was less speculative than yours. I would have come to pretty similar conclusions if he hadn’t posted his before I even saw the photo.

Might welding the damaged area not open out further cracks? and then theres the distortion from the welding, ok, I guess that if the piston head does not contact that far, then its possible to have a welded repair, it would be the cheaper of any option, is the piston bore sleeved? so in that case, you have to use a filler rod that compatible to both types of metal .
