Well I did hear that the original asking price was five and a half grand, but that was when the price of scrap was high. Since then it has gone down to around twenty pounds a ton which EWS I think was forgetting about.

Still these is basic economics isn,t it?, a case of supply and demand, oh and by the way Bob our bid was lower than yours :-k .

    Regards
    Chris

I don't know anything about QM brakes but how much steel is actually in them? Most brake van weights are made up of concrete.

Not the "queen Mary,s", these are made up of steel and timber as these were built on 1936.

Putting aside the timber for the moment which was completely rotten anyway, what you have is a 25 ton vehicle which I based on £25.00 a ton scrap which goves ?, well you can guess the rest for yourself.

So Bob put in a price of £3000 eh?, I suspect that this one went for £5000.00 plus , hope i am wrong here.

    Regards
    Chris

I think Steve was referring to the ballast in the underframe. I can't see how a bogie brake van can weigh as much as a much longer coach without such ballast unless it was milled from solid steel- but perhaps they used iron scrap such as brake blocks.

Short wheelbase bogies were probably 4tons apiece at most and the underframe maybe another couple of tons (having broken up a 61'6" underframe a few years ago we were astonished to find the the solebars and trussing weighed in a only three or four tons or so). Add perhaps a ton for the timber and you are 10-15 tons short of the nominal weight.

Just to add a bit more to my previous post, in the early days of the NYMR the railway was given an LMS brake van by a scrappy who had purchased it on the basis of its weight, but found that in practice there was so little steel in it that it wasn't worth his while to cut it up.

I'm no expert on Queen Marys, but I do know that the early SR Brake Vans were filled with scrap from the works, for ballast, and not concrete, when they were made.
My 2 axle 'Pill Box' also weighs 25t, which is the same as a QM. You can see under the floor plates, that its stuffed with bits of metal / old chains etc etc !

I know its a different design but when we dismantled the body off my shark there were huge lumps of steel in between the frames for ballast. God knows how how heavey they are. Was expecting concrete. So the mistery owner still hasn't said anything. 8-[

The foxfield one is in pretty much the condition it arrived as it had been partly burnt out before it was bought for preservation. The owner is slowly getting together what he needs to start work on it, although I'm not sure when that might be!

Chris, here's the link to the Foxfield stock list entry for the SR bogie van, photo isn't current but gives a reasonable view of the van before moving to Foxfield. Not a lot different now, but what you can't see is the condition of the roof which is sadly lacking!

Thanks for the link ,I see what you mean about the roof.

The one on the Bluebell 56290 is now up and running. I was with the team that almost completed this vehicle before I went to the Mid-Hants.

    Regards
    Chris

56303 is not at East Usk anymore. I believe it is at the Dean Forest Railway, but I don't know when it was moved here.
