If you go exploring on the Geograph website, this track is also in the vicinity.

This is the one that I was thinking may have continued along the farm track.

Here is a plan of the railway, downloaded from the planning application details on the council's website.

At an educated guess, it looks like an NG15 2-8-2, one of 120/121 or 146; SAR anyway I would think, judging from the large patch where the number
plate would have been. I'm not so sure about the smaller oval though, perhaps a works plate?

Looks different to this NG15 cab - https://www.flickr.com/photos/theabbott/21226054238/ (not my photo) which also looks similar to the WHR NG15 cabs.
The NG15 cab seems to have a cutout on the back edge for an additional handrail which doubles as the pivot for the swinging seat, this is not evident in the pic above.

I guess there are a few contenders from that particular location!

Keith, I've since looked at other photos of NG15s and think you're right. There were two builders of NG16s, Henschel and Anglo-Franco-Belge and neither of these used oval works plates. The Henschel ones were rectangular, as in your photo link, and the AFB ones were a sort of threepenny bit (or 50p!) shape. It doesn't look like the other contender, their NGG13 No.82 either, as the Garratt worksplates were mounted on the boiler cradle. I'll have to do a bit more background sleuthing!

    News today:

It is with great sadness the Vale of Rheidol Railway announces the death of the company’s founder and Chairman Mr Peter Rampton.

The railway would like to pass on its condolences to Peter's Family at this difficult time.

"Peter was the driving force behind our amazing railway. His passion and drive to see the Vale of Rheidol Railway restored to its former glory will remain testament to a man whose legacy will live on for many years to come. One of life’s great eccentrics the world is a lesser place without him. Rest in Peace old friend."

I'd add my condolences and certainly the VoR in its current form is a lasting legacy.
A real shame that he didn't get to see the proposed NG museum completed.

Those of us who follow a gentleman called 'HubNut' on YouTube will often see VoR engines featuring in his videos. Indeed it is very sad news: as a young boy I was intrigued to see Rail Blue narrow gauge engines in my Locoshed books.

I see on the VoR facebook page
    https://m.facebook.com/rheidolrailway/posts/2877784568903882
"VoR staff pay their respects to Peter Rampton who was a great friend to the railway."
    With photos.

Guess a bit early to say what will happen to his loco collection on the farm, but guess the trust will ensure they will be OK.
