Also, since there are a lot of Churchward, Collett and Hawksworth designs preserved, how about something from Dean, like the 41xx "Dean" class?[IMG]

Not really different enough from the 37xx. Now a Barnum would be much more "Dean"; just lacking the magic of a name - but then they date from the era when the GWR generally only gave REAL locos names leaving numbers to such minions.

Linking into the Hull & Barnsley Railway Stock Fund thread elsewhere. I've been thinking something from the H&BR, some of their 0-6-2 tanks had a striking resemblance to Lambton Hetton & Joicey Collieries 0-6-2 No29 based on the NYMR. Some of the tanks survived long enough to be nationalized being withdrawn as late as 1956. Though some of the passenger types would be nice as they had some nice Domeless 4-4-0s all/most of which were withdrawn pre war. Some of the 0-6-0 or 0-8-0 wold equally suffice to accompany NELPGs J27 and Q6, though a passenger type would be nice.

Pretty ..... but come on folks .... if it's Dean era you want, I'd still go with the 'convertible' 2-2-2. Just think .... all those parts in common with their (second) 4-2-2 rebuild, plus any of the three possible flavours would be equally inappropriate for mainline use. If A1SLT can design out the issues with the P2 leading truck, would the known weakness with the std gauge 2-2-2 leading axle be likewise do-able? What's not to like?

(Slightly) more seriously, as we've got City of Truro and Earl of Berkley to represent the GWR 4-4-0, how's about commemorating the Dean era with a 3206 'Barnum' 2-4-0? A good utility class which, despite being only 20 strong, ranged far and wide, with several ending their four decade careers on sometime Cambrian routes.

If you are going H&BR, I'd quite support a G1 class 0-6-0T (I'll let the aficionados think about why!)

Not just any - it's my Trojan horse route to a Chatham rebuild ... (For background, William Kirtley, who was the LCDR Locomotive Superintendent also acted as a consultant to the H&BR when it opened, and specified a series of locomotives of his own design, of which the 0-6-0T and 0-6-0 goods engines were very similar to his LCDR designs).

The last few issues of "Steam Railway" have had articles on the "New Builds" and there is what seems to be a quite fair summary in the latest issue. It correctly identifies fund raising as the most important element, technically we can do pretty much anything....if somebody pays!

Is that the type, one of which ended up at Haydock colliery? It was Southern number 1600

Yes, the latest issue has an interesting article along these lines and it puts them into four groups, from nearly there (Patriot, Beachy Head etc) down to distant prospects (Claud Hamilton, P2 with A4 front)

Sounds very similar to the recent New Build Steam overview article.

To be fair to steam railway, they started their new build review last year and have been doing section by section, and have only just finished the final thoughts/review. However it's interesting to note that both sets of people come out with a similar opinion after taking the time to look at the finances of each project.

Very interesting and pertinent to any of these new build projects. Enthusiasm is clearly not enough!
However, from today, the future could be very different as a new generation is going to have a very different view on machines, new or old, that burn fossil fuels. This changing mindset could have severe implications for the heritage railway sector, or it (hopefully) might not. In any event, the World has changed today. (Not a criticism, just my opinion.)

I've got a Question in General. New builts are being built by the original drawing in foot and Inches or are they constructed with modern metric CAD-drawings (childen and engineers get exclusivly taught in SI units!!)? Especially if parts are being sourced from abroad, non SI are quite exotic for most suppliers (were the Boiler drawings for DLW Meiningen in SI units?).

    Cheers
