http://www.9466.co.uk reports that, perhaps unsurprisingly, the late Dennis Howell's Pannier tank is on the market. More details to come late April it says.

Indeed and a fitting memorial to Denis - it would probably find a home on most if not all railways - BUT let's just hope we can save ourselves from a long running nonsensical debate on NP of the kind "it would be really nice on XYZ Railway" . . .

and of course, its mainline registered , or was up to recently . I hope who ever buys it, can afford to keep it on the mainline, as small main line tank engines are very few, only her and one other pannier . I wonder if Mr Hoskin has a thing for ex GW panniers ?

Well I wouldn't fancy a ride behind his 42xx on the mainline, 25mph is bad enough!

A great deal will depend on how important the main line equipment is to the buyer. There are only three heritage railways that might want it for that reason, the NYMR, North Norfolk and Swange andb I doubt whether the NYMR are interested As far as main line use is concerned I think the only real contenders are Tyseley. I'd rather like to see it end up at Didcot, where it would both fill a gap in the collection and give them a much needed small, working GWR engine, but have they got the finances?

To me the best outcome would be if the supporting group could acquire it after all the work they have put in supporting Dennis over the years

rumours as always abound with two parties understood to be interested .

Well that didn't take long for the speculators to jump . . . . . having spoke to Denis at some length when the loco was being first restored (a long time ago !) he was quite strident of how it was and was not to be used etc etc - so those that wish to speculate may find it fairly worthless at this stage as for example he may well have laid down some conditions as to its disposal? (this is just pure speculation on my part, before we get the usual suspects getting on their high horse)

Yes, what livery it's going to be painted in is far more important.

9466 entered service, it appears, in 1952 so the BR livery which it had in 2016, which I presume was its latest, is the most appropriate.
However, as it is often pointed out on NP, it the owners choice as far as the livery is concerned. I would be happy with whatever was chosen.

Well, this is supposed to be a discussion group - where's the harm lie in discussing possibilities? I don't for a moment suggest that we have any influence on the outcome.

Indeed if 9466 is still mainline approved. She could be used by the NYMR as station pilot at Whitby.........

Don't the NYMR prefer Southern engines though?

Doesn’t the MNR rely on 9466 for it’s summer steam services? Could a change of ownership cause problems for them?
