Yet again, another great article and superb advertisement for the A1 trust, this time from the Mail on Sunday. I know the first mainline run is going to be in the north east, but wouldnt it make much more sense commercially to run it from KX, and get all these enthusiastic hacks along for the ride?

You have jumped a day...the x3 page article appears in todays newspaper,Saturday,Oct 18th.DAILY MAIL,not the 'Mail on Sunday'...It also appears with the Mail's website.

Wouldn't it be nice for someone in authority,be it a minister or captains of industry, just for once say, chaps,we are proud of you and what a wonderful job you have done.

No,this will admit expressing a yearning for a thing of the past, and doesn't fit into their modernisation plans for the railway..oh! and we musn't forget, carbon footprint, greenhouse gases, pollution, health & safety,we are fed daily...

Yes,it's a proud moment produced by a dedicated few,for the masses. And with the help of the media coverage, patting ourselves on the back for once without all the trumpet blowing and flag waving.

Not wanting to sound a sour northerner, however, as it was built up here, and the large amount of covenentars are from the area, i think the idea of the first run up here is only right.

You in the south will get plenty of opportunity to see it when it chases the money on VSOE, and similar operations.

Runs out of Kings Cross and the like can come later.

I understand that, but from a purely commercial viewpoint Tornado needs to get as many bums on seats as possible to pay off its debts - column inches mean publicity, and publicity means ticket sales, its that simple. In these days of economic worry, if running from a london terminus means more journalists from the nationals take the journey, then it would be madness not to do it (if it were possible).

That said of course, the first run is likely to be full of covenators, so perhaps the first truly 'public run' would be best running out of KX, and could be advertised as such. I guess we'll see what their plans are when they're publicised.

The fact it was in the north for its first moves, did not stop the bigwigs in fleet street and TV from turning up in August, it also gave a healthy boost to all heritage railways at the same time.

The A1ST have a reputation for getting the maximum exposure for every first they acheive, and as such i expect them to "milk" the next few months for all they are worth.

Cannot wait for mainline tests to commence, the next chapter is just starting!!!!

With luck, UKsteam.info will have them, but probably only a day or two before the event.

First run to newcastle (and only one according to website) for certification purposes at 75mph will be on 18th November 2008.

Once everything has been completed and all tests are completed to satisfaction, it will then enter the paintshop.

    Hope this helps.

Blue Peter wasn't allowed to go over the High Level Bridge a few years ago; whether Tornado will be allowed to, now that some major restoration work has been done is another question, but I would suspect not. (Don't quote me though... ).

I would think that the logical thing to do will be to run up to Tyneside via the ECML, over the King Edward Bridge & through to Heaton Depot. Turn at Heaton & then retrace route back to York.

Whatever happens, it will be good to see Tornado being put through her paces.

Remember 71000 was allowed over it this year, after its SPAD incident at Tyne Yard.

I think it was a "one off" to allow the tour to make up time after probelm at Tyne Yard.

The reversal was not then needed, as the loco was then pointing South after getting back to Tyne Yard, it was the "towed" back into newcastle ready for the journey south.

Times now available from uksteam.info. Looks like this test run is going to take place under cover of darkness.

I've seen elsewhere that 60163 will be taking up VSOE duties. Does this mean 35028 will be freed up for other work? [-o<

They will more than likely be taking turns. This probably means they get time to do full inspections on Clanline and Boiler Washouts etc......

It may be that 60163 will cover for Clan Line during next summer's maintenance period. IIRC she's due for an "intermediate" overhaul next time. AFAIK Clan Line remains VSOE's prefered supplier, so-to-speak, and I don't expect that to change any time soon.
