I would've thought that itiwas blindingly obvious; to restore a useful loco

I'm thinking it will be 3million. I'm thinking no one wanted a similar brilliant 8F a similar loco fully restored for a tenth of that. It could go the same way as the class 15 and cobo there, extremely long term we'll never see and lack of realism. So unless someone very rich has brought it, it just won't fund

Possibly, but surely the ELR itself would have bought it for that purpose, rather than an individual? If it was me, I wouldn't buy a loco/remains of a loco, just to break it up and give the bits away to a third party.

Who said anything about giving the bits away. Could this individual not sell components to ELR? 13065 does not sound healthy if you read various chairman's updates.

I think you are missing my point. Why would the ELR buy bits from an individual, when it could have bought the whole loco itself?

See your point ghost ; The ELR perhaps simply doesnt have the readies at the moment, and because we dont know who the individualis, or what their relationship to the ELR is, and therefore what a potentially reciprocating arrangement might be...

Loco spares to 13065, tender frames and parts to 46428 which lacks a tender. Could be an option. Not necessarily a popular one (or even one I'd want to see), but it would be an economical use of an engine that has a very long shot at best of running again. Sacrifice one for the good of two.

Steam Railway says the tender was scrapped (I think they said last year, but not sure).

The relationship of this indivdual and the ELR does remind of a while ago reading the story in SR of the Wensleydale Railway selling off a station, trackbed and land that recently transpired to be sold to none other than David Smith of West Coast Railways. I hope what's left isn't used as spares but I do have a feeling that it might, ironically if it is the case then 42765 will certainly be two crabs to say it already has 42859 con rods.

Tenders - one of the ex-Barry Standard 5's has a tender chassis from a Black 5/8F. 42700's tender chassis originated in 1881 - source VCT/RHRP Tender Survey. Good for the individual rescuing parts and potentially making them available to ELR for 42765, in the early days of preservation the few lines relied on loans from individuals to acquire locos from BR and industrial service and they were paid back over a number of years, similar principle for this kit of parts except presumably they pay when parts are used, could be very useful for keeping 42765 running

When Kohlapur was purchased by Tyseley it had a 3500 gall tender. Tyseley purchased Alberta's 4000 gall tender from Cashmores at Great Bridge for use with Kolhapur.

The story in SR is a bit confused as it is not clear whether the new owner bought the loco off the old owner or the owner of the yard where it had racked up unpaid storage fees after the old owner went to Australia, from recollection OTTOMH the figure owed to the yard owner was c.£20k so if the new owner has just settled the debt (Although not sure how they could have done this legally) a set of frames and wheels for c.£20k seems like a decent deal for the basis of a future restoration?

I think you are correct about the new owner buying the loco from the yard owner - or at least that was my perception from the SR article too. £20k is also the sum I recall.
Regarding the yard owner selling the loco, I'm not a lawyer, but I would've thought that this was possible after a certain time frame had passed and the yard owner had made x number of attempts to contact Jim Arkell. It would be a similar situation to the 'storage wars' TV programme, where unpaid storage fees result in the contents of the unit being seized and auctioned off.

Its common enough now for there to be an unpaid fees condition in storage contracts, and bearing in mind the history the yard owner would have been unwise not to include one. There are usually conditions though, like a requirement to obtain a reasonable price, not sell it to your mate for 50p. A lot of potential for argument and lawyers there.

Indeed - I get regular updates from the Class 15 Preservation lot who, having done a large proportion of the bodywork repairs on D8233, and restored and run the engine, are now rebuilding the bogies. The same crowd are also restoring D5705, and recent updates have again seen work on the bogies, and the electrical system. They don't seem to be unduly dithering, though they are being thorough, which means that things go perhaps a bit slower than @m&gn50 likes.
