You can see from my statement above that I did not comment on it being moved or operated by WCRC. I specifically commented on bridges hopefully being built. I am aware there is a difference; but chose not to comment on it.

It's a bomber to be honest as members of IX(B) Squadron RAF would be quick to tell you. :)

She does look good though but not so sure LNER Apple Green would suit. Apologies for further hijacking the thread.

I don't think any of us A1 supporters will object, given the links we have to the RAF. :)

All good things must come to an end, seeing these disappear from our skies is a sad thing but they have been a brilliant servant for this country.

IIRC RAF Marham's crest is on one of Tornado's nameplates.

Lossie is fairly close to where we are and low passes from these were a near daily occurrence through the 90s.

A favourite path was passing over our school at what cant have been more than a few hundred feet!

It always started with a faint rumble as they got over the hills coming in to the valley, then the advancing whirr, then the utterly deafening scream while you tried to figure out which side they were coming from!

By the time the noise hit you they were somewhere else! Eventually you figured out to look ahead.

Ten year old me thought the world was ending the first time it happened!

    They'll be missed.

There's your hero, driving his tanker up the Lune Gorge motorway, minding his own business..............and one of them came past, the thing was lower than the road level, and there it was...............gone.:eek:
Safe to say it was going a hell of a sight faster than the lorry.

Apparently it looks a lot faster from the pilots seat. My son flew one across the mountains of Iraq on the simulator at RAF Cranwell when he was in the ATC. Managed to kill himself and trash the plane about a dozen times

I bet it was a nice sunny day.... sure sign of a sunny day in the lakes is the RAF coming out to play. Once fell walking I topped a pass at the same time as one which felt not much above head height came over from the other side, frightens the beejesus out of me.

The stories remind me of a time I was playing golf at Goswick, just south of Berwick, it was on the entrance and exit to Otterburn and Spadeadam ranges.

You got used to them being out in pairs, and they ran at really low level coming in from the sea.

We were on the 6th, close to the sea, at the most northerly point, and watched a Tornado just north of us make its way out to sea, pull a tight U turn, and make a direct line towards us.

Unfortunately a playing companion was that interested in his putt, and messing around, it gave the Tornado time to get over the top of us at what felt like 100 feet.

I watched it come in from the sea, whilst the other guy had his back to it impervious to its arrival.

Safe to say he filled his pants once it arrived, he called me all the names for not warning him!!!

I remember back in the '90s I was at Stump Cross Caverns near Pately Bridge with my parents. Sat in the car park at the opposite side of the road, watching traffic, there's this elderly chap and his wife driving down the road... I then saw a dark shape coming fast down the shallow valley just at the other side of the road when it came up to road level from said valley, right next to his car, and turned right over the road, over the top of us at extremely low level. The sound was deafening and sudden.
I very nearly had a brown pants experience, God only knows what the elderly couple in their car felt.
I must admit, the '80s was a terrifying time at school, Tornados on exercises down the Calder Valley most days, saw Vulcans come over sometimes too. One girl in my class swore blind in October '83 that we wouldn't see Christmas. I have to say I didn't disbelieve her either.

    Richard.

I was let loose on the Harrier simulator many moons ago. The outcome was much the same as your son's.

I'd have been very happy to have had such things buzzing my school but all we ever got were Chipmunks from RAF Henlow when the ATC were on summer camp.

It arrived tender first, so facing east. I don't think there are any turning facilities?

Edit: Seen some pics on the lines Facebook page on test run today facing east.

Re-dedication of the Fireman's side nameplate with the crest of RAF Marham (previously Leeming Bar) took place at the Nene Valley Railway's Wansford Station on 26th August 2016, as featured in "The Communication Cord" Autumn 2016 edition. Before and after images captured at Didcot on 25th March 2016 and 25th October 2017 are seen below. A small but very significant part of the detailing that makes a simply magnificent locomotive just that little bit more special, somehow. IMHO.

Grew up in the vicinity of Brize Norton, we had quite a variety of traffic although the majority were VC10's and Tristars.
