Might there be an argument for converting 4110 into a tender loco as well ? A one-off is just that but two of a type makes a class.....

Just out of curiosity, what other work have Minehead got on at the moment? 7828 is essentially finished so, to an outsider, it seems odd that 9351 has been moved to Williton for completion in the next few months.

Winter maintenance on 6960, 53808 for starters and maybe 44422. 6024 is also in there being worked on by its own group.

Moving 9351 is the logical thing to do to get it finished asap.

    (Almost) The 9351 Back-to-traffic Blog

Discussion amongst WSR folk at the weekend identified that the move of GWR Mogul 9351 to Williton Works for final assembly offered a unique opportunity for supporters to follow the work to get her back into traffic. This is expected to take about 120 days and we hope you will be able to follow every step along the way.

The plan is for those doing the work to take some snaps of the work each day that work is carried out on 9351 and for them to be uploaded with a commentary to a blog later that day. We are setting up the blog on the WSRA website and the WSRA Manager, Jacquie Green is doing that, dealing with issues like access, GDPR compliance and the like that charities have to be careful of. That may take a day or two but we were anxious to make a start so this first ‘blog post’ will be going out on my personal facebook page, and other social media outputs. When the blog page is available, all posts will be put there so the whole process can be followed from the start to hauling her first passenger train..

    Day 1

We start with a shot of Ryan Pope, workshop Manager for WSRA Restorations plainly very happy to be looking after 9351 at Williton. The work today was the replacement of the insulation and casing around the cylinders by the BESTT trainees. That there is a fair way to go is shown by the shot of 9351 awaiting its road trip from Minehead to Williton last Saturday. A road move was preferred as a haulage contractor was on hand for another job and the incomplete state of the loco made that more sensible than preparing her for a 10 mile rail journey.

Finally, for anyone reading this who doesn’t know 9351 well, we attach three shots of the loco in traffic, courtesy of Tim Cowan, Ken Davidge and Steve Edge.

Feel free to copy this post to anyone who may be interested.

Are we allowed to mention the L word regarding 9351? (Whisper it quietly, what colour's it going to be?)

What is your problem with 9351 and how can you possibly describe her as "...Frankenstein..."? As has already been said she is very definitely a Swindon design and very much looks the part as well as following in the traditions of said Drawing Office; really just a slightly smaller 73xx. From a footplate point of view I have always enjoyed working on this engine, the conversion to a tender engine increased the coal and water capacity to reduce the need for coaling and visits to water columns during the day. We are fortunate in having several 5101 class large prairies in existence for people to see and experience that wonderful class of engine too.

I very much look forward to hopefully working on 9351 again soon,

Mention of the 'L' word requires a £10 fine payable to the loco restoration fund... (plus gift aid form).:D

Robin, there's a 'WSR 9351' page on Facebook which hasn't been touched for over a year, perhaps you could post there also?

"Below the line". It's a general term for the user comments below an article / blog post / video / etc. They have bit of tendency on some sites of going wild west very quickly; YouTube seeming to be particularly susceptible to re-running the 2016 US presidential election and / or full on McCarthy era Cold War rhetoric in all its unexpurgated glory within about the first three comments of some videos, regardless of the relevance to the subject of the video. Sticking "above the line" is generally a saner policy!

    Thanks

There's a video about my transition on Y-T. It certainly attracted some of that. There is, it seems, always room for hatred, intolerance and bigotry.

Haha, was careful not to mention the L-word! An educated guess based on the tender.
But I'll happily chip in on my next visit

Thanks, thought that might be the case. Information about 44422 seems hard to come by online, so I wasn't sure of the status of it. Wasn't the overhaul at Crewe pretty much the boiler only, with very little done to the bottom end?
