Yes, it's a Pacific, but I would be absolutely delighted to find out that this still survives:

Built by RSH in 1941, ran in Iraq until the 60's. What's more, I do believe that it would "fit" our railways.......

On a locomotive doing 200 km/h the upper part of drivers do 400 and here we are really talking resistance.
This is not influenced very much by streamlining or not.
It can only have been a marketing gag to put a scale model in a windtunnel and then giving air resistance savings with three significant numbers.

    It is rather phallic looking.

It looks a bit like Peter Perfect's Perfectmobile.

    Maybe it is compensating?

I recall reading that the renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy, before he designed the streamlining of the S1 'Big Engine' had seen photos of the GWR efforts and commented that it 'had possibilities'

I've had a 5 minute go at one of the images, giving it
    - valances which make the cylinders etc look a bit less of a bolt on
    - combining the splashers with the steam pipe/front end fairing
    - single fairing over chimney and safety valve as far as the cab.

Does it look any better? be interesting to see what the high quality photo hackers could make of it.

Well, if it is, they certainly produced a looker! I'm not generally "into" the overseas scene, but if this came back home I'd certainly pay to go and see it!

That just seems to be an exercise in how to make every part that you might want to access on a daily basis, inaccessible.

OTOH, the increased time spent on shed is compensated because it can get from A to B quicker once hauling a train - so swings and roundabouts ... :)

Which was done on the streamlined sets the A4's were designed to haul. . the beaver tail obs cars were expected to help as well.

And they did regularly run at very high speed for the day. Calculations were made as to how much horsepower was saved - about 300hp IIRC

Anyone who thinks that air resistance can be ignored at lower speeds has obviously never ridden a bike into a head wind.

Problem is that no one knows how much was saved by smothing.
Small scale locomotive models in wind channels with stationary motion and no waggons in tow was not a safe bet.

So why did aero-engineers experiment with scale models in wind tunnels to test all manner of theories before building prototypes if no useful data could
    be achieved?

Who'd trust an aero engineer? Not one of them tried out an asymmetrical compound propulsion ...

Aero engineers do experiments if payed.
Railway marketing had the money .
