    https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/3852348163/ as an example.

The 1970s (or very early 1980s) seems to have been about the end of pre-nationalisation carriages in revenue (as apposed to departmental) service - quite a number of the Bulleid carriages now in preservation were withdrawn and entered preservation at that time.

I have a book with a lovely photo of 6000 doing a rail tour in about 1976 with a Gresley Buffet on the back, I think even a few Hawksworth and LMS portholes had repaint into blue and grey. Not sure when they were withdrawn though.

I certainly saw Gresley stock in departmental service at that same time and at that very location but my goodness, I never saw anything like that.

Looks like next summer I shall have to make a few trips to the NNR and enjoy these vehicles (and the railway itself, naturally!)

I’m pretty sure that, until withdrawn for overhaul, the GCR has one looking like that.

Our group used to have Gresley BCK 1077 built for the F Scotsman set in 1924 at York.
Withdrawn from Passenger use in 1958 and converted to a Mess coach until sold to York Area Group in 1979.
Used on renewals until approx 1998 now transferred to the LNERCA in store. DE320427.jpg
In mess coach use at Green end in about 1985

Before transfer to LNERCA in the group shed.

What Loco's are rostered for the mince pie specials this week? I am thinking about a trip up to the NNR to make a nice end to my year.

92203 was the booked engine, subject to a few repairs being successful.

Another one? Really? I understand there's a lot of interest in the Somerset and Dorset but it does seem to be a bit same old same old, think outside the box a little, that's all, how's about maybe getting an 8F and a GW 28 and having a heavy freight gala? That'd be a tad different.

The S&D weekend is a fundraiser/publicity event for the Friends of Black Prince group. It’s not a gala, just a general theme for a couple of days with a slightly different timetable hoped for and taking advantage of having two genuine S&D engines based on the NNR, plus a third type which was not uncommon to the line. It’s not about getting engines in as that costs, and the NNR already has three galas a year anyway.

Yeah I’d assumed it was not a full blown gala. I’m guessing the third locomotive that was not an uncommon type on the S&D will be 76084?

Still sounds very interesting. Good on the Friends of Black Prince group for coming up with interesting events.

A bit like the Swanage Railway event - make the best of what you have rather than bringing stuff in.

It's a railway that seems to attract a disproportionate amount of attention and I genuinely don't know why.

As well as Ivo Peters, it was scenic, steeply graded and with interesting traction. The real question is why so many preserved railways try to “recreate” it during galas when they look nothing like.

Perhaps also it was never "tainted" by diesels? I agree though it is odd that as soon as you've got more than 2 locos on a railway of a class that could have run on the S&D everyone immediately goes into overdrive claiming an "S&D feel" to the day. Now I know I wasn't there, but I don't think it really does.
