A unique opportunity has arisen to create a rake of 16t mineral wagons at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway

All that needs to be raised is the transport costs and I've had the pleasure of making the first donation from 30742 Charters

    https://www.gofundme.com/the-wagon-appeal

Please do consider donating to help make the railways Christmas .

the number and location has not been publicly revealed . At the moment not my place so I hope you will trust me . I wouldn't have put £100 in if I didn't believe in it and what will be created will be a superb rake in South Wales and something that has been on the railways wish list for some time

the £5,000 target covers the transport costs from their current location to Pontypool. Multiple lorry moves

Interesting announcement and a suitable location for a rake of such wagons, though it will be interesting to see where they are being sourced from.
Perhaps a particular group have changed their minds from what was put in print about 3 months ago.............

A decent number if they are coming from where I think they could be;) (the key words on the appeal being that they are being loaned, long term, not purchased)
Would actually be a sensible move for both parties (and create more space at one of them) if that turns out to be the case.......

Try working out a haulage cost by guessing how many wagons could be shifted for £5K

not difficult to work out where these are coming from a good move to loan them out there are loads of locos waiting to be overhauled/restored its a shame the same doesnt happen with them as many railwaysare in need of a loco

Umm - I wonder if this matches with a post made on another thread recently about a desire to dispense with something connected elsewhere..........

It was recorded in print in a magazine 3 months ago that a question has been asked as to "why do you need so many...." and this development seems to indicate they have decided they don't - Not at the moment anyway...............

For those of us totally lost by all the cryptic references, any chance you can pass on the details? If so, thanks.

Well, this could be totally wrong, of course..........

The last edition of the FoGCML magazine contained a "Windcutter project update" which contained a couple of paragraphs stating "What is the future for our wagons?"
It stated that "Why have 36 wagons when we only need 18 in the running rake"? The GCR conducted a stocktake of all rolling stock earlier this year with a view to having a "sort out" of surplus/forgotten stock on the premises. The question was obviously asked at the time - Do you need 36 mineral wagons?
The intention appears to be to have 2 x 18 wagon rakes in the future, but several that have been used are now u/s and stored in Quorn yard. At the time the piece was written, they were looking at getting as many non-operational wagons fixed "in the next 12 months", as parts have been accumulated to repair them. I expect some of them would need to be kept as spares for the running 18 rake on the GC.
If there is no immediate need for two full rakes on the GCR, then the 9 or so wagons at Quorn could just as easily go elsewhere on loan to be returned to operating condition and used accordingly......

It frees up siding space (and event space at Quorn) and gives a chance for another railway to achieve one of its aims. About 38% of the surviving wagons are on the GCR, so that would be the logical place to start looking, rather than dealing with several lines who may have one or two wagons each. I'm taking it that no further wagons of this type remain anywhere in industrial use.

Thanks @Johann Marsbar for your replies and that makes sense, and also explains that it isn't that the GCR wants to 'get rid' of the Windcutters but quite correctly seems to be looking to give itself more space and allow currently surplus wagons to be used elsewhere.
