The Merc looks to be a write off! Glad no-one was hurt, but if the car driver was racing the train he should be prosecuted for sure!

A similar comment tweeted by one of Norfolk Constabulary's finest: "Unsurprisingly, the train emerged the victor."

It looks as though the car hit the train - ie the loco was on the crossing when the car drove into it if that makes sense

Pretty obvious to my eyes what happened here, but I'll wait for the RAIB report.

Think that crossing is on a private road within the golf club if I remember correctly. The Poliss may not have jurisdiction for prosecution of the car driver.

How can you not see a slow moving engine when lights are flashing and bells are sounding!!! He doesn't appear to have driving down to a Tee!

This would be routine normally unless there is some special consideration with it being a private road.

Anyhow, looks like no/minimal damage to people, crossing equipment or loco so not too bad. I just hope it doesn't lead to the railway having to pay for an expensive crossing upgrade despite not being at fault.

It could also be used as another reason for refusal of new level crossings on line extensions.

Well by the looks of what happened the driver wasent paying attention to sirens bells lights flashing at level crossing and may ave been going fast so looks like the driver of the mercs at fault possibly. And the driver on the J15 might not ave been able to anchor on in time seeing the motorist, doing 25mph on the loco

I believe the line speed at that spot was quoted as 10mph, but even at that speed reaction time and an emergency brake application aren't going to stop a light loco in the time it takes a car driver to run through the lights.

I'm guessing there must have been a lot of refunds for the dining train customers too.

Obviously the most important thing is that no one was seriously injured (and the Y14 wasn't damaged)

I don't think it can be classed as a private road unless access to it is controlled. Having looked at Google street view there does not seem to be any gate across the lane before the crossing. There do however appear to be statutory warning notices, including warning of "ANPR quality" cameras which may be used for prosecution of crossing misuse. There is even a red warning sign (non-standard?) on the road before turning into the lane. The view of approaching cars on one side does seem to be partially obscured by an overgrown garden hedge, but I don't know the date of the street view image so that may not be there now.

There is no difference to it being a private road. Because miscreants were getting away with things on private car parks the law was changed so that the Road Trafic Act was changed to all landthe public may have access to. That includes motor sport on private land. If you run an event, as I used to as secretary of an off road club, you need to get a dispensation. In our case we got them from the Motor Sports Association (previously the Royal Automobile Club)
