I would just add to that sentence "wisely and effectively".
The amount of sheer waste in procurement is legendary and utterly shameful for this country.

 

Until you find yourself in circumstances where you discover yourself to be desperately short of either or both. Though the adhesive weight should prove very advantageous in ensuring that more power can be reliably delivered to the drawbar.

So far as the cylinder performance is concerned, the Franklin B type valves have never been applied to a locomotive built to work in the UK, so anyone with first hand experience of them is not going to be easily found here and from what I understand they are rare in the States. The Americans were very good at the mechanical design of their engines and the problems faced with use of the Lentz gear is said to be well overcome with this application. In due course David Elliot may give us some information to allow us to compare port areas, clearance volumes etc. to help keep us entertained while we wait (hopefully contributing) for this build to be completed. The test of use will supply us with what we want to know (or possibly not, depending on where your allegiances lie).

Have had a look around Darlington today: the P2 is sitting on all its wheels (achieved with a wooden pony truck). It looks just so.... impressive!

 

Note the tyres off to the left.

 

I wonder what they could be for?

 

And nestled inside the tyres is a chimney...

 

that does look good, will the cladding be kept in place and painted up before it has to be removed to fit the boiler, which I should imagine the engine will be complete on the bottom end, and have it's tender by then, so despite it won't have its boiler fitted, it will have the impression of being complete , be quite a sight if displayed with other surviving LNER engines, such as the A1, A3, and A4 ,And if completed A2, if at York, you could throw in Green Arrow,

 

But what colour is it? LNER or BR Black?

 

I could see it's first runs being in battleship grey, why have a showroom finish and then let a load of grubby boots and fingers go over it whilst it's being tested?

As I understand it, the frames will soon be separated from the wheels and the cladding removed to allow work to commence on component fitting and other works.

 

That would make a lot of sense, I thought that the cladding was just a temporary fitting just to make sure it fitted. Have to say 2007 looks rather impressive in its present state though.

I believe it was and it does look very imposing (I think this is the first time it's been seen on all its wheels). However, my concern (completely unfounded, I'm sure) was that in the state we've seen it, it could mislead some into thinking it's more complete than it actually is and that could affect fundraising.

 

They must have been to Devon; they weren't that shiny when first acquired.
