Ticket arrived this morning - in coach H. Anyone know what the load will be? Less than the normal 13, I imagine? Odd timings aren't on RTT yet, too.

A to H = 8 so add the kitchen car and that makes 9 + support coach.

There might be a brake with no passengers in it.

Just had an email informing passengers Tornado will be hauling Mk2 aircons.

    It said:

"Although we had planned to run this train with Mk1 rolling stock, as we generally use on all our tours at present, the 14th April tour will be run with Mk2 air conditioned stock. This is because we have not yet received clearance from ORR to haul Mk1s at 90mph with steam. Although this happened in 2013, and speeds up to 100mph happen every week on diesel and electric charters, an exemption to certain regulations is required and we have not yet received this. ORR wish to carry out a full industry consultation which has not been possible in the timeframe."

Does this mean diesel on the back as well? Or can the genny cope with the ETH?

Would prefer Mk1 at 75 with opening windows so can hear loco, than cocooned in a coffin at 90. Have not booked on Saphos trains for this reason.

To say this takes the shine off the occasion is a massive understatement!

This really is regulation gone mad.

"we've already run Mk 1s behind steam at 90mph"
"we regularly run Mk 1s behind diesels and electrics at 100mph"
"yet we need to consult the entire industry about running Mk 1s behind steam at 90mph again"
What's the big deal? It's not as if anyone is proposing to run the train with a rake of Gresley teaks (although wouldn't that have been marvellous?) or have a crack at Mallard's record on Stoke bank.

Still, no criticism of the AlSLT. It has done its very best and surmounted a huge number of obstacles just to enable a 90mph run to take place at all. Just a pity that mindless bureacracy has defeated them on this one point.

And how many months has ORR had to not deal with this?

Find it hard to disagree with this, on the train Saturday as are others on here. I remember after the 100 mph run it was said by the A1SLT there probably wouldn't be a 90 mph run before the end of 2017 in order to give a long lead in time. Seems strange it could not be done within this time frame (a year ago today) or why an industry wide consultation needs to be done. Raises more questions than it answers!

This means big changes to stock workings and crew duties at very short notice. The A1SLT could have cancelled but didn't. Be thankful for what is being offered with at least one 70 mph start to stop section. Load 10 plus POB. Moaners please stop. ORR need to consult before making the change. That's the way it is in 2018

My experience of Tornado is that it's so quiet that you can barely hear it anyway, so whilst the prospect of needing something to do ETH is a bit concerning I can't get that over excited about this. The rest of the email, concerning just how much 90mph running will be possible, was far more positive.

How many 'moaners' here are actually on the train?

If it's the blue and grey Mk2 Riviera set which was out on a class 50 tour last year then one of the Riviera genny cars will cope fine, as it did on that trip. so should be no question of diesel on back. Still hugely disappointing.:(

Just realised the Blue and Grey mk2’s are out behind the 50’s on a trip over the Cumbrian fells on Saturday... this can only mean an interesting colour mixture behind Tornado...
