Pretty much AFAIK. A bit more grunt than a DG, so more useful, but not nearly as purty in my book. :)

Ooh goody, I love spot the difference... I've got it: the numbers are different!

    Typical boring Swindon uniformity.

Of course everyone knows that the purpose of a motive power design department was to provide variety for trainspotters, not a managed range of power for the railways traffic :)

The D1 and E1 Class were similar, I can remember them roaring past my local station, Grove Park on Kent Coast trains with about 12 on, very powerfully machines for their size. I converted a Triang L1 to a D1 reprofiling the cab with filler and a lot of work with a file.

Wasn't there an article on that conversion in Railway Modeller forty-something years ago?

Hornby converted the Triang L1 to a 2P in the early 70s by slightly changing the mould

Makes more sense though, doesn't it? Building them purely to their original designs would probably cause some poor risk assessor to have a fit, or limit them to crawling along already restricted lines.

Mind, considering a glut of Mk 3's are due to come up from 2020, and the A1 Trust are already buying up rakes ready for their own touring train, I suspect it's only going to get worse for purists... and better for the pennies, safety and comfort of the more casual enthusiast...

You know what, I think we should try and do everything to the letter, as originally done.............. provided the purists are happy to pay for every extra penny that would cost ;)

Mark 3 coaches would look ridiculous in anything other than blue/grey or the Inter City livery. Neither did they ever work with steam, as they didn’t appear until 1975. Mark 2s you can just about get away with as they were steam hauled occasionally at the very end of the steam era, 1966-68, again, I feel that only the blue/grey or Regional Railways liveries suit them.

I think a D1 would be even better. The same size as an LMS 2P but about 100 times better
