Photos from Saturday's run...a 3 and a bit hour drive up the M6 was rewarded with a lucky burst of sunshine at Greenholme. Seemed like the world and his wife was gathered there to see it!

No such luck at Birkett Common for the return, here is Galatea powering on through a rain shower.

Did get a bonus burst of sun for the diesel tour at Ais Gill though:

If BIL is out today on a test and comes through without problem, is it possible that she could run tomorrow?

Weather looks promising for those heading lineside! Sadly I have other commitments today, but look forward to seeing the output later! Keep your eyes peeled for the extremely rare 'Winskill.' They have been known to venture out when the sun shines :D

A similar run to last week it seems albeit a little slower overall. These runs seem to demonstrate what the peak of performance is with Galatea currently on this kind of load. Amazing that in 2018 we can actually get hard evidence that wasn't readily available when steam was over Shap every day simply because the trains had bankers then.

With a supply of locomotives nearby for this route we really should be eternally grateful to David Smith for having the foresight to retain a steam depot in the right part of the country.

Good watching and listening to Galatea on Kirkby Stephen Railcam. Looked 30ish again. Fingers crossed for a sub 30 min climb to Ais Gill Summit. Looked good on Horton's cam working down the bank too.

Just 28secs out. Very similar to the Feb 3rd run, started quieter to Griseburn (37) after a fairly muted effort to Ormside. The fireworks started at Crosby Garrett (44), peaked at 51 over Smardale Viaduct, Kirkby Stephen was stormed at 35, then things petered out to 28 into Birkett Tunnel. We reached 38 on Mallerstang’s easier grades, then things were allowed to fall to a minimum of 28 at MP 260 (30 at the summit board). The time posted Appleby-Ais Gill was 30.28. Very nice climb in some gorgeous late afternoon sun. The linesiders will have had a field day today!

It's all coming across as pretty consistent. Last week it was 30 min 15 sec with 29 at MP 260 and 31 at the summit board.

'The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express' on the 24th February 2018 hauled by LMS 5XP No.45699 'Galatea'.

Seen at Dillicar, near Tebay and Smardale on the S&C.
