So there have been three unlucky strikes for the Cathedrals Express this Christmas... let’s hope this one gets off ok today.

Despite the ECS running early looks like as large delay leaving Ashford. No sign of departure on RTT as yet.

Judging by the engineers train that has just passed me, there does appear to be big gaps in the RTT feed

Was this an isolated delay or part of the apparently widespread issue with iced juice rails? It really has been a bad time for SD recently.

Ha! Should have been following this thread. Just got a text from my wife saying "We're supposed to be singing carols for the people on a steam train and there is no sign of them at St Thomas's". Quick check on RTT, 43L at Whitchurch - oops. Next text: "Can you pick the kids up from school ..."

Crossing the A331 between Frimley Green and Farnborough (Not a place I'd normally shoot from but as I have recent images of 45212, I thought I'd take a chance)

The announcements at Salisbury blame poor rail conditions at Ashford (Kent).

Ironically I heard it wasn't the steam excursion that couldn't get traction.

Passing Pirbright 34 down. It appeared that all Down traffic was using the Down Slow.

Correct, problems with the frozen third rail affecting the units.

If this train had been on time, there would have been just two and a half hours to shunt the train, turn the loco at Laverstock, service the loco and reassemble the whole train for the return. As it turned out there was only an hour and three quarters and I notice that the train left on time for the return.

I suggest that had there been no diesel to help, the train would almost certainly have been late away on the return and as it stood, timings for the stock and loco movements would have been tight anyway. That is probably one reason why the diesel stayed with the train down to Salisbury. Not what some people would have wanted but if that was the only operational way it could have run then so be it, I guess.

You must have been the chap I spoke to at the crossing. I was about 100 years further up towards Oakley. I hope my picture comes out as well as yours!
