I like you Mr Cartman! :D

It's on the radar but there's clearly other fish to fry first. It would need a new wheel to replace the one that's cracked but there's no reason why it couldn't be done.... notwithstanding the usual need for cash of course. To quote Kevin Keegan: "I will love it!"

It would certainly be a fascinating sight with the earlier style smokebox not often seen on running engines today (struggling to think of any, bar the really early replicas at Beamish or Rocket, with a non-conventional smokebox door). Not sure it would grab the enthusiasts attention as much as another umpteenth Standard or generic looking 4-6-0, but I'd certainly be well behind it!

It just made it to the grouping as far as I know, and was withdrawn by the LNER not long afterwards

The decorative tuft of material, the GCR 9J/LNER J11 loco, or the weapon which carried the nickname conferred on the loco? One or more of those choices may be considered a tad worrying by some! :)

I think that's harsh - there are plenty of locos around the country in a much worse state in sidings. 65033 is waiting for the overhaul to start. Much paperwork to do I suspect.

Nothing harsh about saying that something that looks in a sorry state looks in a sorry state. It just does. And the fact that there are others that look worse doesn't change that.

65033 was in a sorry state when it was stored at Darlo Works in the early 1960s, together with 65099. It looks positively handsome now!!!

Has the lettering on the loco and tender been badly Photoshopped on, or just utterly the wrong font? To me, that's not in a 'sorry state' - when it's down to a set of frames with no boiler and missing axles, then I'll call it a 'sorry state'.

That was where I first saw it, standing behind the works with 65099 in 1965. We thought we'd stepped through a time warp and we didn't have a clue what those two small-boilered, tall domed locos were. I had to call in at the shop at bank top station where I was lucky enough to find a 1961 copy of the North East edition of Ian Allan's ABC on sale. That's when I discovered that they were J21s.

Nail, head... spot on, permission to start is ongoing. With regard to the bits, everything worth nicking is in an ISO container at the back of the shed. The only thing missing is the regulator and it looks like we'll have to make a new one. If that's the case, we'll go halves with the G5 who want one identical.

I should add that the restoration includes a new cab and tender tank; they really are shot.

It's this sort of sensationalism I have spoken about in other threads that railway preservation absolutely does not need, not least from people within or around the movement. It's not in a "sorry state". It is definitely tired.

The repaint was done to make it more presentable - presumably for helping to obtain funding (mission accomplished).

I am pleased to hear that and look forward to updates as the project to restore progresses.
