A few of my pictures from an excellent day at Cranmore. Many thanks to Martin and the ESR guys for a great day.

Fabulous pictures from what was clearly an excellent day.

Putting my rivet counter hat on it is interesting to note the differing details in the restoration of two consecutively numbered locos. Most strikingly the front numberplates have different spacing between the numbers. Also the smokebox side lamp brackets are in slightly different positions. Then there is the off center BR crest on 41312. None of which you would notice until they are placed side by side.

That said they are both a beauty to behold.

You never noticed the different chimneys? 41313 is fitted with a shorter chimney. This is for gauging purposes on the IOW. 41298 is so fitted, as well. This type of chimney was fitted to the earlier Ivatt 2 2-6-0s and 2-6-2 tanks, when built.

You're right - I didn't notice the chimney differences. Must learn to do a better job when next I'm rivet counting!

However I did notice the chimney differences when 41312 worked on the KWVR some years ago with 41241.

I did the first two trains & driver for a tenner on the Mogul.

Very nice it was too - and while it was dry at Cranmore it was p*******g down at home in Frome

A big 'Thank You' to the ESR for organising it

Perhaps not a rush hour squeeze, but busier than I've seen the ESR before. The car park was full when I left at 1pm. Great atmosphere, with engines appropriate to the line. Great to see so many young volunteers in the sheds, which commendably remain open to the visitor.

Wish the ESR would make the push for Shepton Mallet - it's frustrating seeing the edge of town from Mendip Vale but not getting any closer.

I certainly felt that the ESR was starting to justify its existence with this event.

There is, I suggest a lot to do before heading for Shepton Mallet, such as reinstating signalling, tidying up the station buildings at Cranmore and overhauling the track

Normally the other way round with the weather! The rain did reach us just as we had all finished disposing though!

Having played my part in the visit of 41312 I'm pleased to see that the day seems to have gone well . The ESR is a line from my childhood and one I have a real soft spot for . It deserves its moments in the spotlight .

Speaking with the railways GM there are projects they would like to do but as with everything manpower and money make all the difference . Sadly Shepton Mallet , a tantalising three quarters of a mile away has a landowner who shall we say is not keen on the railways reinstatement and a bungalow across the trackbed . Who knows in time

The weather forecast for Saturday was decidedly iffy but the thought of three Ivatts in service at the same time was just too much to miss. Just after lunch the sun appeared through the dark skies and lasted until the last train of the day had departed from Cranmore. The 15:30 departure consisted of 41312 and 41313 double-headed hauling five coaches and a van. As the train passed the engine shed Ivatt class 46447 trundled by light engine in the opposite direction. It couldn't have been timed better. There were just three of us filming the scene and I'm sure that they're as happy with their results as I am.

The day was excellent but as I didn't travel on the day I handed a donation to the booking office.

Many thanks to the ESR for organising such an event. <BJ>

Wonderful stuff; thanks for sharing all the photo's and video's. As a young trainspotter in Kent in the 50's i well remember when 41312 and 41313 were together at '73F' Ashford MPD along with several of their sisters. Saw many of them almost daily around Kent then in charge of local passenger trains and the odd freight or two.

My manager's father (an ex-Faversham driver) used to drive 41313 on occasions according to his logs.
