Thanks , yes it is a very slow line with only the climb from Haverthwaite itself really any good .

Compared to the Santa specials the normal trains are swift, with the need to get Santa through etc I suspect they run barely above walking pace.

I think for many LHR passengers - many from overseas - the steam train ride is an agreeable supplement to the main event of their day, which is the boat ride on Lake Windermere. This is inevitably reflected in the way the railway works and presents itself.

Here are some photos taken in April. There are three of Victor (not working) and I have included others of it and Vulcan at Longbridge in 1973 by which time they were out of use:

Photos of the railway in the 1970s are here. They include the Fairburns in their final BR days in Bradford:

Photos of a Victorian evening in 2005 with Furness Railway 0-4-0 No 20 are here:

    https://andrewstransport.smugmug.com/BritishheritagerailwaysI/Lakeside-Haverthwaite-2005

Photos of a steam - diesel mixed traffic gala in 2006 are here:

    https://andrewstransport.smugmug.com/BritishheritagerailwaysI/Lakeside-Haverthwaite-2006

And finally photos of an afternoon in 2007 when both Fairburns were working:

    Cheers

It's a real pity that their trackbed is severed which gives them a very shirt running line.

I've always thought the L&HR were more of a tourist railway hence why the length isn't really an issue.

The railway works very well when I've visited, as an enthusiast it is not my favourite line by a long shot, but I was impressed with their set up and can clearly see that they are set up well for what it is the railway is designed to do.

Looking at those photographs its such a shame that Lakeside Station lost its canopy, its just a bit soul less these days.

The canopy itself was not a structure of any beauty - the station buildings themselves (knocked down before preservation) were, and that is the real loss at Lakeside.

I agree that the loss of the station building is a real shame. However, a visit last October was depressing when looking at thestructure that remains on the water's edge. I am not sure of the ownership arrangements between the steam railway and the Windermere tourist boats, but the remaining Victorian brick buildings were in all honesty a mess; plastic gutters, cheap wooden alterations, rusting ironwork. With a bit of imagination (and fully recognising the cost), something of the original splendour of the remaining buildings could be recaptured.

Unless it's changed the whole site is not owned by the Railway Co, their property ends at the ornate iron bridge just outside of the station.

There was a plan many years ago to build a replica of the station (I think complete with canopy), but I think there were issues with either ownership of land or possibly ground conditions.

More like a 'stalking horse' to get planning permission to enable them to build the "Lakes Aquarium".

Had a somewhat unexpected trip on the LHR over the weekend as with a poorly wife at home, me and the young un went for a ride out, sadly Haverthwaite to Lakeside was diesel hauled (class 20) as the steam had failed but after three circuits of the aquarium at Lakeside (including very lively Otters for a change) we had steam with Repulse on the way back, sitting in the observation car next to the engine which the tiny terror enjoyed greatly!

Its a short run (always shocks me that its only 1.8m shorter than the KWVR which always feels hugely longer) but a friendly one and with my FRT membership and her being under 5 a free ride as well, although much was spent in the cafe and shop at Haverthwaite!

Popped in to the L&HR today. Very pleasant little line. Just disappointed a Fairburn wasn't in steam.

It appears Ivatt 2MT 46441 has moved to the L&HR today! They've not said why but have posted a photo (attached below) and video of it arriving onto twitter.

Interesting! Lancaster Green Ayre loco back where she occasionally wandered in BR days :) Hope this signals a return to steam in the future!

Is she the one owned by the Beet family who was previously at RSR?

Indeed, couple of sobering personal recollections re 46441. Nearly a quarter of a century since I passed out as a fireman on it and 14 years since I helped arrange a temporary relocation to RSR!
Hope a working future at LHR beckons for the Ivatt, splendid loco.

........ and also part of the line she was envisaged to operate on when initially preserved at 10A, until the County Council and the A590 intervened .....
