Can't help but thinking this class could have been so much more useful if the front end had been properly sorted it seems that they only fiddled with the draughting throughout the lives of these loco's. It would seem that they were on the way to sorting it with the Kylchap fitted to 5684 in 1937.

My idea! Probably after the tests with GWR 6023 a discussion about the Jubilees makes sense.
Their 1:7 tapered chimneys would be ideal for a cheap adaptation.
    Kind regards

Presumably it needs to be more like 1:12 with no lessening perhaps increasing of the choke ? so that would need a new pot ? - Think we will have to wait till a new one is actually needed before anyone will spend the extra to change this.
Also the chance that the characteristic (of throttled exhaust) roar so typical of this type would be lost. :Bawling:
Still Bahamas with its 'last blast' configured double blast pipe is supposedly 'good for an extra coach' so if it can be 'got right' there's some incentive there.... Is the copy of the 1961 Rugby tests on this class available to shed some light as several other chimneys had been tried on Jubes before hand without much joy...

Apparently the jubes were front end limited by back pressure during some last gasp speeding up of services it was found that they would not go past 97 mph.
As to the kylchap apparently it was very free running but threw fire when pushed something about the kychap being too big?

If the chimneys are of original dimensions, they do not need any change, just the blastcap.
I have been given 67 Rugby test results, I think I know what could be done.
    Kind regards

Are we to assume from the above, that you would recommend a fabricated, steel blastcap to your dimensions ? in which case the savings made would soon repay the cost and, may be of interest to a certain TOC on the West Coast, it would be nice if Mr. Shutleworth could have a word with the owner once the cost/benefit becomes known.
I really like the idea of a 'Super Jube' especially if we can improve on the 97 mph. limit... ;)

Yes, assuming that my information is correct (Rowledge/Reed, the Stanier 4-6-0's of the LMS). The Rugby data are ok anyway.
The 6023 blastcap was contracted outside and cost around 350GBP. Looks like fair game isn't it? A few tons of coal.
    Kind regards

Perhaps hang fire until 6023's got some mainline mileage under her belt?

Is anyone proposing to redraught a Jubilee, or is this just hypothetical. Did Chapelon patent the Kylchap, so they would have had to pay royalties to use it.

No, it is just a good idea! At the time the Kylchap was patented, that should now be expired.
However, nowadays a Kylchap is just a completely unnecessary complication.
    Kind regards

The patent for the double chimney/Kylchap at least expired not long after the much lamented Sir Nigel Gresley who died in April 1941. The patent expiring in September or so '41.

I was thinking the patent may have put the LMS off using it in 1937; obviously not a problem now.

Given his contribution to the overhaul of 6023 is there any value of Jos Koopmans contributing to the overhaul of 45596 or has the Bahamas Society not reached that stage of restoration ?

Those interested are patiently waiting on the further tests with 6023, as far as I am concerned they rightfully do so!
Since this is a blastpipe change only the working Jubilees would be preferable imho.
    Kind regards
    Jos
