Perhaps lack of sufficient income would be a factor too? I strongly suspect that many overhauls could progress rather more rapidly were there more money to wave at the job. But your basic point is completely valid. Reminds me of the tale from K J Cook (head of Swindon Works) immediately post grouping when he was criticised that there were 100 locomotives over conventional allowance awaiting overhauls, so perhaps they should be scrapped and new ones built. Cook countered that since all the services had been run they should scrap 100 and not build any new ones, and in the end that's roughly what happened.

Not exactly a state secret, though, is it?

Probably not, but at the end of the day, the loco is private property and was moved to a 'secret' location to avoid further unwanted attention. I don't think it is anyone's place (bar the owner) to reveal that location.

I'd add lack of traffic - if all were overhauled. The SVR has 30 engines, but not enough turns were they all to be operational. Across the sector it would probably be that more operational locos would find work, but if there was an infinite capacity and finance for overhauls there would be too many for the traffic available

Which I think is a good point. It is unlikely that this engine will ever run again, but it would be good news to here that it is somewhere safe and not subject to further depredations, or at least can provide parts for another loco, notably 13265.

I wonder in hindsight whether @LMS2968 would the Stanier Mogul fund have ever considered taking it on ?

A nice idea, but I think my fellow Committee members would organise a lynching if I suggested it! We're fully occupied with 13268, thank you.

And as D7076 says, it's more useful to the 13065 people. Although the two classes tend to be lumped together, there are in reality very few parts which are interchangeable.

I believe that some parts of the motion are interchangeable with a fowler 2-6-4 tank. Our chairman of the LmS Patriot project knows of the person who has the remains of what's left. I'll ask him on Saturday if he know what remains.

If rumour was correct the motion of 42859 was acquired from Barry by another loco group and was offered for sale.

I doubt there are that many interchangeable parts, to be honest: the Class 4 Tank's valve gear, i.e. the valve events, were derived from the Horwich Crabs', but that is not the same as having interchangeable parts. The return cranks will be different, probably for length but they also used different attachment methods to the crankpin; the expansion link of the Crab was a very long one following USA practice and not carried over to the tank, and the radius rod is lifted by a swing link in front of the expansion link on the Crab, on the tank it was an extension of the rod into a forked arm direct on the end of the weighshaft behind the link.

Both were excellent machines and much of the excellence was derived from their valve events, but I doubt that a lot of of the valve gear itself will interchange.

I did read somewhere it might have been on this forum that the wheels for this loco are stored on the Lincolnshire Wolds preserved line.
