    Hello all.

I have a spare day in Berlin coming up.

Anyone have a recommendation for a railway/railway museum? Don't mind travelling a bit out of town.

My real interest is steam, but diesels will be acceptable.

    Regards.

Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin is well worth a visit.

Although it covers more than railways a large number of locomotives are displayed in a former DB roundhouse.

Worth a look if you want a day out. Early start/late finish on some of the long distance trips, but the local ones round Berlin are reasonable. Prices are pretty good too. Agree about the Technical Museum, well worth a few hours there if you only have a half a day spare.

There are some good suggestions above, especially the technical museum and its two half-roundhouses. It has the advantage of being usually open. In other respects I have found Berlin a bit frustrating in that while there can be something going on, one has to catch it on the right day - so well worth doing a bit of internet research.

There is something in the northern outskirts called the Heidekrautbahn (google "Berliner Eisenbahnfreunden") which is a preserved steam line - but it has so far never been running on a day I was in the city.

For something a bit different (and usually open and very cheap), one can walk over the disused former Tempelhof marshalling yards, tracks still in place but now returning to nature, but with some art installations and a plinthed class 50 2-10-0. It's next to the S bahn station at Priesterweg.

The website "Berlin Macht Dampf" is also worth checking - a group running mainline steam excursions from Betriebsbahnhof Schoneweide. Unfortunately their base workshop only has one open day a year. I twice got to view one of their steam excursions setting off - one was a let-down, proving to be a last minute diesel substitute with only 3 coaches (evidently such things are not just a UK occurence!). The other was a magnificent sight with two large steam locos - my video is at
