Sorry sunshine but trying to pass off an 18 year 66 which is still in normal service as an acceptable substitute for an 86 year old steam loco then you are living in delusion. What don't you get about paying customers buying a product and not getting what they paid for. Look at some of the Trip Advisor negative reports on all tour operators and the stories of personal disappointment when special days (expensive days) are ruined. The don't give a damn attitude of some is pathetic.

I agree that the (in)action of Pathfinder meant that people didn't have the opportunity of cutting their losses and simply not getting up in the morning for the train. In an age of good communication, that was unacceptable and will have involved people with unnecessary 'travel to train' costs that could have been avoided. So a few learning points there for them for the future if they still have passengers' confidence.

On the FTR exam, I really don't think there is any way around the last minute problem generated by an exam failure. All a support crew can do is carry out pre-checks to pick up anything that can be dealt with prior to the formal independent assessment. And I believe that this happens anyway with some owners.

Give it a rest, there was a loco failure and nothing could be done about that, I notice that you haven't come up with any suggestions other than wasting money paying parasites (sorry consultants) who know nothing about railway operation. I'd hate to ever sell you a second hand car

Why don't you give it a rest? You bleat and moan about people having different opinions to your with an intellect devoid of respecting there are different opinions. Oh and I don't buy second hand cars. Pejorative name calling denotes those who have no argument and a total lack of understanding as to how some jobs can add value. If you are going tohave an over acrching review of a multi stakeholder business, you need someone unconnected to the stakeholders to hold it all together. That way you end up with a fair and equitable end point.

I genuinely hope that then next phase of this years TBX's runs to plan and Braunton delivers great performances that delight passengers and linesiders alike. Fingers crossed for the right weather and the right coal...

That really does make a lot of sense. In other words, a steam loco is just temperamental just like my missus!

Talking of getting stressed over a diesel, that's rich coming from you, the very same person who threw your toys out of the pram because you couldn't ride in the first coach behind a Western diesel at the West Somerset Railway. A week later we discovered that on your return journey you had photographed the engine from the first window of the leading coach and was then stupid enough to exhibit the evidence on your photographic website.

I do wonder if Pathfinder running a diesel tour from Eastleigh to Stockport the day before played a part, the message about the failed FTR wasn't passed on because the majority of staff were on that tour until late Saturday perhaps ?.

Another thing to perhaps remember is that if a fault is noted we do our best to rectify that fault. Sometimes though this can fall down, especially on that enemy of reason the intermittent fault. This can involve working past a time when it would be sensible to perhaps give up and declare the thing a failure...sometimes you feel that you are almost there with fixing it only for it to fail again.
It is a very stressful situation for those involved in preparing the locomotive....you don't want to admit defeat if there is the slightest chance that you can fix it, on the other hand this perhaps gives what turns out to be a false hope for the operator who requires the loco. This, in turn, obviously can lead to late notification of unavailability to customers.
I'm saying this can happen, not it's what did happen in this instance, but simply pointing out that there are perhaps more factors involved than is generally realised. The other side of this coin is, of course, that if a failure is declared too soon, other arrangements are put in place. Then perhaps the failure is rectified, the loco is fit to run but because of the alternatives in place it doesn't run.
So, in a lot of ways, it almost becomes a no win situation, damned if you, damned if you don't.

Wise words. And if it was an intermittent injector problem that caused the failure you do have exactly that dilemma.

1 the train ran already acceptable
2 they got the run so that's also acceptable
    3 they got compensated
4 I fully understand but that's what you with your small mindedness doesn't get.
5 I do give a dam, so that's urinated all over your bonfire hasn't it.

And the winner is.... NOT YOU!

  17. Hear hear to that. I and others have done trips like that and trust me its red eye stuff which we do as volunteers. Even though we enjoy it sometimes it can become a bit of an extensive exercise.
