Then again, if the Euro were to fall relative to Sterling, the converse would be true. The global markets were on balance, out-performed by the UK on Friday which was a surprise to many.

Regarding the effect on preserved railways, the light at the end of the tunnel can be replaced by a 100 watt bulb.

Exactly, the cheap holiday myth is just that. Cheap holidays are available everywhere, not just within the EU.

While it's not an option other lines can follow both for geographical & business reasons (I assume) there is no doubt that as a Tourist Business the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway is a great example

Most of the railways we are discussing are Heritage railways and so the P & D is not really a model for most, its only real concession to heritage being the use of steam locos. I would hope that most heritage railways have their sights set higher.

My view is that it is far too early yet to say what the real effects on the industry will be. In the very short term, fuel price rises will hit both consumers and providers and EU regional development grants will obviously fall into abeyance very soon, but in the longer term, EU grants will probably be replaced by home grown ones, using money allegedly saved by not paying it to Brussels. Perhaps there might even be a bit more because of the reduced bureaucracy! And if more people are put off travelling to Europe because they will now have to join the non-EU lines at passportcontrol, will have to buy additional health insurance and so on, that can only be good for the home tourist industry.

I can assure you the holidays I've taken in Europe have been of less cost (cheaper) but are not cheap in the standard for what they provide - please don't confuse the two. There are also some excellent railways to ride on especially in Switzerland . . . .& many would outshine any in the UK.

    Innovation is the key.

Can I take a moment to blow the trumpet for the tremendous 'Freedom of the Line' ticket the WSR commercial department is trialling this year.

£25 buys you seven days of unrestricted travel on the WSR * with all the great things there are to do along our 20 mile line.

If you haven't visited before, or for a while, what a great product to build a week's holiday or a long weekend around.....

Brexit? You will be voting 'Remain' in the Sonersexit poll by the end of your week!:)

And there isn't, as yet, any variation in the value of the pound as you cross the border into Somerset......

While I haven't costed it, I live in Frome and - for example over the holidays I'm sure the kids would probably manage two visits in a week (How the staff would cope is another matter) so you could get quite a few of those who live in travelling distance using it that way.

But, please can we have some real coffee on the trains!! You have 160PSI plus at the front so should be able to manage a decent on board latte (Oh and some real milk as well)

This is, as I have said, a trial. Ridership will be monitored, but it is hoped that reducing the pressure to get the most out of a day rover may spread demand onto less well used services for shorter trips - if you have done BL to MD on one day, perhaps MD to WT on the next might look attractive.

I'm with you on the coffee. Upmarket is definitely the way to go, IMHO

....which is why i asked for the link because RalphW has stated the complete reverse...i think it's important that statements such as that be backed up with at least some proof...discussions are now on to let the immigrants through the tunnel or the ferries to be dealt with by the British at Dover or wherever and that inward customs to France be dealt with at Calais, as it used to exist pre-EU.......if you don't mind i will transfer your link to the Brexit thread....cheers

The Saturday Telegraph (p9) quotes Die Welt and the country's Finance Minister that Germany's contribution to the annual EU budget could rise by £2.4Bn when Britain leaves.
    Aha !

No, apart from the fact that it was on sky news.
The other point being that the camps are there as a staging post where the illegal immigrants wait until they get the opportunity to cross the channel, once this side they would just disappear, not form an orderly queue for another camp.

With a Bulleid Pacific, you have 250psi at the front, but there is no draw off supply to the buffet, (apart from steam heating).

I'm with you, and Robin, on the real coffee, and a decent fridge to keep real milk cool, so we don't have to drink UHT. Espresso machines are universal now, so letsbeavinem.

The definitive answer then; Brexit will give us real coffee on heritage railways. Of course the damn stuff will be imported.:(

Maybe people will revert to being tea drinkers again - like they did before we joined the EEC (EU). :D

Sorry to digress a bit but I find that the price of accommodation and hotels in particular in the UK defies belief. And it is not as if everywhere is full either. In terms of holidaying in the UK it is the single biggest obstacle.

Out of interest - EU grants for heritage railways have been mentioned a couple of times. I'm aware that the Welsh Highland received significant EU regional development aid, but are there other examples of heritage railways that have been funded that way?
