Quite late on into the steam era on the Southern (early 60s) several classes were numbered using the diesel style numerals, the examples I know of were the USA tanks, Brighton Terriers and Beattie well tanks, possibly P class as well

As far as I know no other locos ever received these, anyone know why? In the case of three types, they were small locos so space on the bunker/cab side may have been the reason, but this would not have been an issue on the USA tanks

How late? Late enough for "not going to order any more steam size transfers"?

This was a deliberate ploy by the Timelords in the 1960's so that future modellers could be harrassed by rivet counters 50 years later as to why have they made a model with the wrong style of lettering. Then the modellers could get out the book with photo evidence showing that it really was like that in real life. (or it could just be as nothing else was available....)

Probably because its what was to hand at the time, especially that late on. Quite often with repairs today, if you don't have the correct size or type of numeral, you use the nearest thing and (occasionally) change it later when you get the correct item. It's sent a few websites into wibble mode when we've done things like that on the the fleets I work with.
