Finally here's just north of carshalton beeches.
    Banstead road / bridge

And the "icon" location shot of carshalton beeches (this spot appears in just about every Railtour photograph that came this way in the 60s) looking toward Sutton

    image.jpeg
(and the opposite direction showing the peak of the climb towards Sutton.

Remains of an old southern railway sign still on the bridge.

Not all London suburbs are grim :)

Thanks for all the pics. Looks like most shots on that line are almost head on from bridges and not too much width on station platforms. If the sun's not shining I may well film from the opposite platform for more width and pray I don't get bowled. Looking at RTT she passes a Sutton - Victoria train at Wallington so if everything is on time, Carshalton Beeches or Waddon should be ok.

Have to say, thats a much more dramatic and pretty effort than RTT, albeit a little lacking in details.

Based on todays wreckie (and by looking at the (small) volume of historical pictures), the fact that so many (of so few) people in the 1960s went to the bridge west of Carshalton Beeches to watch the various railtours must mean something.. it is at the apex of the climb and on the curve..

Waddon is right on Purley Way 4 lane dual carriage way, junction above and next to the station with lights etc.. it has horrendous traffic day and night, trucks, buses etc. Its loud enough anytime of day so I discounted it early on for a video.

If you feel lucky, between Waddon and Wallington (by the old Bandon Halt station) is a cricket club with the only non-cutting related section... over looked from the cricket pitch.. but i'm not sure your chances of getting in.

so my plan is, run down to Clapham and across to Wandsworth road to watch the turn, run back to Clapham, then take the 0956 to Sutton... I'm thinking the Bridge west of Carshalton Beeches, or CB itself.

If for any reason a circus endures, The Alamo will be the 10.17 Dorking, which takes the fast route to Sutton, for 1043 (and work on the assumption if it's late from Clapham it's going to be corresponding late further up the run) will give me enough time to hot foot it east wards towards CB.

As for the STP working between Sutton and West Croydon, not much chance of that being late (on a 5 mile run), so I'd go with Carshalton Beeches, it'll be running into the curve of the station (and its nicer than Wallington)... if the unit is late then 34052 will be on single yellows by CB, as the unit will be coming off the Epsom Downs platforms at Sutton crossing it's path.

Nice to see the nameplates on but I hope that they sort out the headcode discs before tomorrow. Probably the best compromise given the route needs to be two discs on the buffer beam - one in the centre and the other on the driver's side. That covers London Bridge to Portsmouth via West Croydon and also Havant to Soton.

My main concern for tomorrow is that if the footex loses a lot of time, the diesel will help out, even with an equivalent 10 coach load. You also no that there will be no moaning from the passengers if assistance occurs as there all non enthuiasts and couldn't care ! Hope all goes well and looking forward to it regardless of the outcome.

As far as this tour goes, for the pax, getting to the church on time is all that matters.

Oh and sticking a load of ale down their necks.

Generally DBC crews don't like the diesel helping out and as we know it's for ETH/Air Con only I'd be hopeful that the fans get a good steam run.

Is 34052 picking up the coaches at Stewerts Lane?
Presumably it's at Southall tonight? Does anyone know timings and detail of route from Southall to Clapham Junction tomorrow morning?

It left Southall late this afternoon, and is currently just round the corner from Clapham Junction, stabled overnight in the Battersea loop.

Thanks, MrKnowwun. That means I won't see it . . . commitments and all that. Still, at least I won't be hanging around waiting for it at Hanwell.

Can anyone tell me which route is being used between Havant and St Denys? Is it the Hamble line or the Botley line?

If so does anyone have more detailed timings than currently on rtt?

Hamble line and you don't get much more detailed than on RTT.
