Network Rail's calculations are for a 4000 gallon tender to cover 72 miles; methinks FS will not need to stop given that figure.

She looked OK at Lancaster but cannot comment further as she was coasting and virtually silent..... However the support coach sounded like it has square wheels and there seemed to be sparks under the diesel (which may be perfectly normal for a 47 being dragged whilst ticking over it may just been visible as the light was low)?

Lovely footage Stephen. Sounds like an A3 to me with everything working as it should be. Can someone now deal with that whistle? You can't tell me that the NRM doesn't have another one sitting somewhere in the museum!

It does sound magic doesn't it? Respect to the man who set the valves - it wasn't like that when we last ran it. As for the whistle, I am sure it is 60103's own, bought at auction for the NRM by Jim Rees. That's what she really sounded like.

Then it needs tweaking and tuning up right - I've heard whistles on 5" gauge locos that are more audible and better than that!
...still, at least it isn't a chime, we should be grateful for small mercies! ;) Lol.

From memory even of tours in the late 70's and early 80's she always had a really puny weak whistle, always assumed this was the A3 standard whistle?

Sadly, I can't upload an MP3 (I've tried a few times) of another A3 'Book Law' tearing past Newark South Xing with her whistle wide open. It's track 2 on side 2 of Peter Handford's 'Gresley Pacifics' EP. An amazing sound...completely different to the squeak 60103 emits!
