Advice on most realistic simulator for PC?

Never having tried a train simulator before, what advice for getting one for a PC?
I don't need one that can be played as a game. I'd like as realistic as possible, and preferably with some narrow gauge add-ons such as the L&B or some of the Welsh lines.

    Cheers!

Most realistic these days is Train simulator 2014, although a lot of the content isn't freeware and what is quite often requires payware elements to work. However although quite dated the original Microsoft Train simulator still has a following and stacks of content available including some narrow gauge stuff, some great advances were made in the quality of the add ons available and a lot of it is freeware. Whichever you choose this website is a good place for both advice and content - http://www.uktrainsim.com/

WIP thread on the N3V forums here if any one wants a look http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?56167-Ffestiniog-and-Welsh-Highland-WIP

Should add that Trainz is getting a complete new Game Engine due for release around December which should bring it up to date, 64 bit DX11 OGL4 with improved everything.

Open Rails seems to be a good one for the future.

One thing I will say is don't buy TS2015. It was released full of bugs and flaws and it has destroyed my enjoyment of what up until then was becoming a decent simulator.

DT games even released a patch last week to try to fix things and broke the game even more, the incompetent numpties! Resorting to them having to roll back the game to make it work for the majority of users.

IMHO they should roll back to TS2014 until they correct all the bugs.

What's the current train simulator scene like? I have Rail Simulator (2007) but haven't bought a new one since then. Assume TS2016 is the go-to game now?

On a side note, anyone played Train Fever? I'm absolutely addicted to it, despite the limited amount of UK rolling stock.

I've played Train Fever, but am completly crap at it, keep trying to expand too rapidly me thinks and link all the town then wonder why the finances are in the red!

By and largeTS2016 works very well , although I've noticed a few bugs with some of the rolling stock not wanting to couple sometimes (the Riveira in the 50's Pannier being the worst offender), slowly wasting my evenings currently on it building a fictional GWR/LMS mainline, only got 8 miles of track and 1 mile fully scenic-ised so far so plenty to go...

TS2016, running on a really good spec is great.

I tried on a i7/4Gb/1Gb Video Card/SATA hdd PC and it was desperate.

Since moving to a i7/16Gb/2Gb GTX Video Card, and importantly a SSD drive as primary, it works a treat.

Support was absolutely US on this, got my support from a US railfans forum.
