Can anyone tell me if the Churchward 3500 gallon tender that was part of the Barry 10 Loco collection and was latterly attached (in the loosest sense of the word) to 2861 still exists, and if it does where it is?

Link here of the tender in 2012 in case you are uncertain what it looks like (look at picture 14)

    Thanks

Don't think its been used for new builds at Didcot. I haven't got all my data where I am at the moment, but 2999's tender received Collett frames at some stage in its life, 4709 is getting a 4,000 gallon Collett tender and the County's tender is based on components from a WW2 era tender. The Vintage Carriage trust have done a lot of good work on identifyng tenders, but it might just be that one has eluded their list. Has anyone got photos of 2861s last move? Did the tender get moved at the same time? is it at Llangollen?

Didn't get to Llangollen. We only broke the loco up.

I did see/hear somewhere that it may have gone to Didcot but have not seen definite evidence so thought I'd check on here. I have badgered Didcot about other tender matters recently so don't want to ask too many more questions of them at the moment though they have been most helpful. Jim is right it has eluded the Tender Register on the VCT site. I am hoping to put that right but need to find out if it still exists/where it is.

    Regards

    Justin

There were photos of this tender being broken up a year or two ago and IIRC parts were being saved for the possible GWS County 4-4-0 project.

Can you remember where you saw the photos? I would be interested to see them.

They were sent to me by a friend living in S Wales electronically. Not sure I could find them again though!

Well that does sound like conclusive evidence that it has been scrapped. Many thanks for the info

Pretty sure that the chassis is still extant in one lump at the moment. I'll ask about when I'm next at Didcot (hopefully next week).

the photos I saw showed the tank being cut up which might tally with K14's suggestion.

The photos did give the impression the tank was going to be of rather limited value!

Would really appreciate you checking that out. If it does survive and you could get a photo that could be used on the VCT Tender Register that would be a bonus.

I have had confirmation from the GWS that they do have the chassis of this tender at Didcot. Some small parts are being used for the restoration of tender 1719. However the chassis, which has been identified as 2143, is regarded as restorable if required. Incidentally this is the tender that arrived at Barry coupled to 2-8-0 no.3822 which was rejected by the GWS in favour of another one when the GWS bought 3822 in 1976

My recollection of that tender is that I could just see the letters "Great Western" beneath the remains of its BR livery; well it was probably just UV damage rather than pigment, but a fossil of those earlier days.
