Nuffing wrong with it, just nice to know what way its going to be pointing. I guess it needs to get beyond the ELR/NR boundary to get a turn, and I guess its not allowed to trespass on NR metals yet.

The NRM's recent video suggests the latter, with a straight air brake and M8 brake valve both visible to the left of the driver's position.

Rebuilt in a 'shed' at Bury, an expression used more than once. Not the best way to describe Mr Riley's engineering facilities.

There is a photo doing the rounds of the loco being fired on £10 and £20 notes. This is obviously photo shopped as the Loco will only work if it is fed £50 notes.

Yes the loco looks good etc and well done to those who have finally achieved their goal but Mr and Mrs 2.4 average family will not care if it is a 'new' loco, repaired loco or original loco. Therefore my opinion on it as a taxpayer is that it should have been returned to steam in the cheapest way and if that meant building an all new loco with welded German boiler thats what should been done. Otherwise it should have been properly conserved for museum display only.

How much taxpayer's money went into it though? Would you apply the same "logic" to the BBMF for example? Ground them if a cheaper way of keeping them flying can't be found?

You have managed to spectacularly miss the point.

How much money do you think that 60103 has put into the NRM coffers through merchandise and donations since it was bought for the nation? How many more people have got through those doors when it was on display being overhauled, and made their entrance donations and paid for food, drink and merchandise at the NRM accordingly? How much money do you think it is going to generate now it actually works and can then be seen around the country as the NRM's ambassador?

I'm a member of the 4472 Club and know we all put money in of our own accord, both for purchasing the locomotive in the first place and towards the overhaul. It's not all taxpayers money and to suggest that its just or only drawing on taxpayers funds in the form of the grants from the group the NRM is part of is an atrocious misrepresentation of what has actually happened.

In any event: a working, restored and reliable Scotsman will make the money back and then some. The interest this locomotive will draw this year is going to be something special.

And to be perfectly frank, anyone who considers stuffing and mounting 60103 as an option, either in the past, now, or in the future, does not have the best interests of railway preservation at heart.

All valid points. Has any forecast been made as to the additional revenue the overhauled loco will generate? It's likely to offset the cost but to what extent and against what running costs too?
Everyone on the forum would answer yes to the question of whether they would wish to see the A3 operational again. If you asked the same people whether they would have endorsed the sums eventually spent if it had been proposed in advance I suspect the answer, with heavy heart, would be largely negative, particularly if the proposal was placed in context with other potential spends of the same money.
It just goes to show why we should all be pleased that no proper evaluation was made at the outset and financial prudence was largely absent in the initial mismanaged phases!

If everyone is honest, the sums of money spent on 60103's overhaul will not be recouped on what the engine can earn, that is partially what went wrong in past ownerships, , the best you can hope for is that she earns enough to pay for its next overhaul, which as this one has been so though should be a lot less, IR/NRM will ensure she is used an a safe manner and not overloaded, that there is a proper maintaince and care programe in place, that needing to earn revenue does not come before the need to carry ot washouts etc, or 6 monthly exams, one very good factor though is that during this down time she could be in The NRM, on desplay whilst some routine work is done ,so earning revenue for the NRM, as long as IR's boys are not swearing like troopers, as they struggle to undoo that one bolt :) i should imaging some visitors might enjoy watching work from the gallery , :).

Great to hear that the ‘Flying Scotsman’ will soon be gracing our railway again.

Good to see it making such news coverage, hopefully it will get more people interested in heritage railways. Could be an idea to use this for building general interest.

Just seen re-tweets of what several mobile phone video clips taken through bushes overlooking Bury Bolton Street. It appears to be 60103, then 45407, then coaches.
If you have twitter search for @alishabuaya Daily Mail Australia journalist. Traveller.
