All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – January 1965

Diesel locomotive building was being undertaken by British Railways workshops at Derby building class 25’s, Crewe building class 47’s and Swindon building class 14’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with Beyer Peacock building class 17’s, English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry building class 37’s and Brush building class 47’s at Loughborough.

Doncaster works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

Main line diesel production in the month increased significantly from the previous months thirty to fifty two. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased again from one hundred and thirty nine condemned to only one hundred and six with only one BR standard condemned. One reason for this was by the beginning of 1965 the Western Region had been mostly dieselized with just a few pockets of steam left which meant that Western Region steam withdrawals were relatively low. Major casualties this month were Ivatt Class 4MT 2-6-0’s with fifteen condemned and Stanier Jubilee class 4-6-0’s with eight condemned.

Doncaster works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

Main line diesel production in the month dropped from the previous months fifty two to thirty seven. Steam withdrawals in the month decreased again from one hundred and six to ninety eight. The continued delivery of the non boiler freight Brush Type 4’s (class 47/3) .was starting to impact on the heavy freight steam fleet with eighteen 2-8-0 locomotives and more significantly nine BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 locomotives withdrawn. The withdrawn 9F’s were all less than eight years old.

Main line diesel production in the month remained steady at thirty seven. Steam withdrawals in the month increased slightly from ninety eight to one hundred and five The delivery of further non boiler freight Brush Type 4’s (class 47/3) continued to impact on the heavy freight steam fleet with a further twenty two 2-8-0 locomotives and four BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 locomotives withdrawn. In addition to the four BR Standard 9F’s a further seven BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn. One additional withdrawal in the month was Brush Type 4 D1734 which was only ten months old when condemned with severe collision damage. Finally the most notable withdrawal in the month was the last steam locomotive constructed for British Railways, BR Standard 9F 92220 Evening Star after an active life of only four years.

In addition to the five BR Standard 9F’s a further nine BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn. One additional withdrawal in the month was the prototype Great Western Railway 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter 15100.

Main line diesel production increased in the month to thirty one. Steam withdrawals in the month increased again from one hundred and twenty five to one hundred and sixty seven. With the drive to eliminate steam from the Western Region by the end of 1965 forty eight of the withdrawals were from the rapidly dwindling Great Western Railway designed fleet. The delivery of further English Electric Type 3’s and Brush Type 4’s continued to impact on the heavy freight steam fleet with a further thirty one “eight coupled” freight locomotives and three BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 locomotives withdrawn. In addition to the three BR Standard 9F’s a further eleven BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn. Of those withdrawn three locomotives avoided the cutters torch and are still in existence, Collet 0-4-2T 1450, Collet 0-6-0 3205 and West Country Pacific 34039 Boscastle

Main line diesel and electric production increased in the month to thirty nine. Steam withdrawals in the month increased sharply from one hundred and sixty seven to two hundred and thirty eight. With the drive to eliminate steam from the Western Region by the end of 1965 one hundred and eleven of the withdrawals were from the rapidly dwindling Great Western Railway designed fleet with no less than fifty being 0-6-0 pannier tanks. The delivery of further English Electric Type 3’s and Brush Type 4’s continued to impact on the heavy freight steam fleet with a further forty nine “eight coupled” freight locomotives and five BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 locomotives withdrawn. It was also a bad month for the surviving 4-6-2 Pacific’s with thirteen withdrawn including the first BR Britannia 70007. In total twenty one BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn during the month, the highest monthly total yet. Of those locomotives withdrawn at least two locomotives avoided the cutters torch and are still in existence, Midland Railway 4F 0-6-0 43924 and a London Midland and Scottish Railway version 44422.

Of those locomotives withdrawn at least five locomotives avoided the cutters torch and are still in existence, Stanier Black Five 45379, Stanier 8F 48624 and three BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T’s 80080/98, 80135.

A further nineteen BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn during the month including the second Britannia 4-6-2 to be condemned 70043.

Diesel locomotive building was being undertaken by British Railways workshops at Derby building class 25’s, Crewe building class 47’s and Swindon building class 14’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry building class 37’s, Brush building class 47’s at Loughborough and Beyer Peacock at Manchester building a batch of class 25’s. Class 86 electric locomotives were being built by both Doncaster works and English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough also commenced delivery of the first of five Brush Type 4 locomotives fitted with a Sulzer 12LVA24 V12 power unit producing 2,650 bhp as opposed to the standard Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder power unit fitted to the remaining fleet. These five locomotives were classified class 48.

It was also a bad month for class 5 4-6-0 types with forty being condemned of various classes. A further twenty six BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn during the month. Of those locomotives withdrawn at least one avoided the cutters torch and is still in existence BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 92214.

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – October 1965

Diesel locomotive building was being undertaken by British Railways workshops at Derby building class 25’s, Crewe building class 47’s and Swindon building class 14’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry building class 37’s, Brush building class 47’s at Loughborough and Beyer Peacock at Manchester building a batch of class 25’s. Class 86 electric locomotives were being built by both Doncaster works and English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry. English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry also commenced delivery of the production batch of class 73 electro-diesels.

New locomotives:

Class 37 – D6605/06/07
Class 47 – D1902/06/08/09/10/11/12/13/65/66/67/68/69/70/71
Class 73 – E6007/08/09
Class 86 – E3123/24/27/81/83/84/85/86/87/88/90

Main line diesel and electric production decreased slightly in the month to thirty eight. Steam withdrawals in the month significantly increased from one hundred and eighty five to two hundred and forty two. The end of steam on the Western Region was fast approaching with sixty eight Great Western railway locomotives condemned. Also the remaining former East Coast Main Line express fleet were significantly reduced with eleven A1 and one A4 pacific condemned and eleven V2 2-6-2’s condemned. The delivery of further English Electric Type 3’s and Brush Type 4’s continued to impact on the heavy freight steam fleet with a further thirty four “eight coupled” freight locomotives and six BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 locomotives withdrawn. It was also a bad month for 4-6-0 types with seventy one being condemned of various classes. A further thirty eight BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn during the month. Of those locomotives withdrawn at least one avoided the cutters torch and is still in existence West Country Pacific 34007.

Locomotive building was being undertaken by British Railways workshops with Derby building class 25’s, Crewe building class 47’s and Doncaster building class 86’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry building class 37’s, class 73’s and class 86’s, Brush building class 47’s at Loughborough and Beyer Peacock at Manchester building a batch of class 25’s. The Brush Falcon Works at Loughborough also delivered a further two of the five Brush Type 4 locomotives fitted with a Sulzer 12LVA24 V12 power unit producing 2,650 bhp as opposed to the standard Sulzer 12LDA28C twin-bank twelve-cylinder power unit fitted to the remaining fleet. These five locomotives were classified class 48.

Doncaster works was undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine with the following being completed this month;

D5553/74/76/91, D5651, D5840/46/59

Main line diesel and electric production decreased significantly in the month to twenty four with class 37 production completed with the delivery of D6608. Steam withdrawals in the month also decreased significantly from two hundred and forty two to one hundred and fifty six. The end of steam on the Western Region was fast approaching with another thirty nine Great Western Railway locomotives condemned. It was also a bad month for 4-6-0 types with forty one being condemned of various classes and a further eleven BR Standard locomotives were withdrawn during the month. Of those locomotives withdrawn at least three avoided the cutters torch and are still in existence Great Western Railway Manor Class 4-6-0’s 7812/19 and London and North Eastern Railway B1 4-6-0 61264.

This was reflected by another fifty seven Great Western Railway locomotives being condemned. It was also a bad month for the BR Standard locomotives with fifty five withdrawn during the month. Of those locomotives withdrawn at least two avoided the cutters torch and are still in existence Great Western Railway Hall Class 4-6-0 6984 and Great Western Railway Manor Class 4-6-0 7808.
