    Dear All,
LWR (Leiston Works Railway) have just acquired an LMS brake van. All the numbers etc are missing and the only plate left on it says: LMS Derby Lot no 919 1936. Would anyone have any ideas about how we could trace it or find out the numbers? Please excuse me if this is a really stupid question but I am a complete rookie! We had a great day yesterday moving the van from Wroxham to Leiston, if anyone's interested I've got some great pictures. If you would like to find out more please take a look at are website, we are just starting out and would welcome any help.

What I know about LMS wagons could be written on the back of a postage stamp with a 3" brush, but... On GW wagons the number is stamped into the solebar near the location of the numberplate. It's usually just above the bottom flange & towards the left end.

Time to get busy with a chipping hammer!

Good luck finding a stamped number on an LMS vehicle. If you do find it, let me know where as there are two box vans (one mine, one not) which I would dearly love to know the real numbers of.

But, save yourself the trouble and read this thread:
    https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/brake-vans-national-network.22292/
Yours is LMS 730093, it says.

Edit: Only just spotted that you'd already found mention of it in another thread. I'm sure that's the one as there were only two brake vans at Wroxham and the other was a BR one and rescued a while back.

Do you think the serial number was recorded before the plate was removed? Otherwise I'm not sure how we can be 100%. What do you think? Any idea what the 041364 means too?

041364 is an internal vehicle number used for wagons that are not usually run about on the network and are used only in siding or depots. DM730093 was renumbered to became wagon number 041364 when transferred to internal use only.

Not all of the IU numbers were recorded but www.departmentals.com is a good source of the known ones.
