There are still nominally three s15s (825, 830 and 841) based at Grosmont on the NYMR. The frames of 825 are in NELPG's deviation shed, I think that 830 is more or less intact but tenderless in the headshunt alongside the running line, and there are bits of all three scattered around the site, although the boiler from 825 has left the NYMR to be overhauled at a private site in Scarborough. Most, items, but probably not all, are viewable for photographic purposes with a bit of detective work.

The boiler from 30825 was spotted stored at Rocks by Rail on August 4th this year as pictured. Don't know how long it is staying there. 20150804_120139.jpg

It was reported a week or so ago on the NYMR forum that 825's boiler has moved to a site near Scarborough to be overhauled.

Can 841 even be considered as a locomotive these days? She's had a sad end for a locomotive that was once main line registered :(

Technically yes, frames, wheels, bogie etc still exist. It could be restored if there was the will and the capital were there. if the boiler for 825 could be got back from the mid hants, it'd be no worse than a barry restoration, and possibly easier than 830. If new locos can be built, 841 could be restored....

Could someone be so kind as to provide a potted history of 825, 830 and 841, as I for one am somewhat confused by all this. TIA.

First of all, 841 was restored, then found to have damaged frames. Mostly everything else was still good so they got a boilerless set of frames (825) and swapped everything onto it, thus restoring the loco we see today. Somewhere along the line 830 was acquired to be restored as a loco in its own right, which I believe was a stipulation of sale. Not sure if 830 is progressing or not but 825 has been stripped for overhaul, likely the priority given it's the most complete of the two. 841 is effectively scrapped but technically still extant if we consider the frames to secure a loco's identity through time.

If I've got this straight, there are 3 sets of frames, 2 boilers and 1 tender, and possibly another set of tender frames.

I think the preceding post is a reasonable summary, although I'm not sure which set of driving wheels from 841 0r 825 got used in the eventual runner. I believe there may be a second set of tender frames, if there is they'll be a set of 6W ex-snowplough frames rather than the bogie type, but I believe that some S15s did run with 6W tenders. It was mentioned earlier in the thread that 825's boiler has moved to a site in Scarborough for overhaul, and it was also said on the NYMR forum that 830's boiler is going there to be overhauled, but whether this presages the start of 830's rebuild or is just to provide a replacement ready for when 825 needs it is not known.

Either way, 825 has proved itself to be an ideal engine for the NYMR and I for one hope that 830 will one day follow it into traffic.

it cant be 825's boiler, that is at ropley, 30825 was purchased minus boiler by Sail & steam , then purchased by the Essex loco group as a spare set of frames for 30841 then when that set of frames and wheel sets was used to overhaul 841, it reverted to 825's identity, so that boiler must be off 30830, or the one originally on 30841

It is the boiler currently on 825 that has moved to Scarborough!

The Mid Hants, wasn't it? It was certainly removed at Barry.

There is a second set of tender frames, belonging to a Schools tender which ended its days as a snowplough. My understanding is that both boilers will be overhauled at the Scarborough site.

Attached is a photo of two S15 boilers at Ropley belonging to the Urie loco society. Boiler No.451 on the right of the photo was the original condemned boiler fitted to Urie.30506 when rescued from Barry. The boiler on the left of the pic is Boiler No.799 originally fitted to 30825 before being extracted off the loco at Barry and overhauled to run with 30506 during its first ticket.
My understanding is that nowadays the repairs needed to boiler No.451 are no more onerous than work undertaken during boiler overhauls and in fact is being considered to be the boiler that will go on Urie.30499 when overhauled. IMG_20151004_222707.JPG

S15s did run with 6 wheel tenders but these were the later 4000 gallon version not the 3500 gallon type fitted to King Arthurs 793 - 806. 833 - 837 received 6 wheel tenders in 1936 for use on the central section; these tenders came from King Arthurs and had flat sides. Some S15s later received 4000 gallon slope sided tenders.

You beat me to it! The Bluebell's S15, 847. ran with a six-wheel tender during its spell operating from Redhill shed in the late 1950s/early 1960s. It currently runs with an 8-wheel bogie tender and the tender body was built from new. I'm not sure whether the underframe came with the loco (It was reallocated to Feltham before withdrawal, but whether it acquired a new tender at that time I have no idea.)

847 runs with the tender that went to Barry with 828, which has had the curved top of the sidesheets cut off and straight ones fitted. 828 now runs with the tender that went to Barry with 825 or 830 ( I can't recall which). 825 now runs with the straight sided tender that is of course from 841.

Yes they have a spare boiler. The third boiler not shown in my above pic is No.755 off 30499 that is inside Ropley boilershop and is nearly finished on its overhaul, to go back on 30506 once its frame repairs are complete.

There are actually four S15 boilers at Ropley because the fourth example belongs to the Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society, for 30828.
