Union of South Africa update from SDRE:
"60009 is still with us and we have assisted the support crew and the staff from Crewe heritage in removing the driving wheelset that ran hot at Newton abbot. The axle box has returned to Crewe heritage for assessment and SDRE will assist in reassembly so that the loco can be returned for service as soon as possible"

Here's hoping it wont be too long, she certainly has a long list of commitments in the next few months, lets hope the SDR and RS&G get to the bottom of the current problem, I only hope she can get sufficient running in mileage in, prior to the long run north for her dates with the Borders railway.

Further to the above the work is being undertaken by LNWR Heritage and not Crewe Heritage Centre staff.

I really think that no. 9 is going to come off from this repair and perform magnificently.

generally, how much running in does axlebox bearings need before they can safely be said to be ok? for instance , will the POB/ engine run back to Bristol be ran at a lower speed with stops for examination? If there were any more torbay runs, it may have been ideal to run her to the TSR, to test her on some TSR services, then send her back to Southall at the head of a charter

She be ultimately heading north as she has a Royal appointment mid next week, so I suspect a gentle run north from SDR over the next few days which will give her the mileage.

I've heard she's been restricted to 60mph due to concerns over the condition of the axleboxes, and now the Borders trips are over, she'll be having remedial work done on them. According to one of the support crew the other week, she's getting very tired.

Only came back from overhaul in the summer of 2012, so hopefully nothing too drastic
