    Bored box driver?
No doubt all the do-gooders on here will severely disagree with that comment, totally different to Tangmere's situation at the weekend.
By do-gooders I mean those people who pretend to be steam enthusiasts, but obviously are not.

Or maybe some of those do-gooders wish for mainline steam to last as long as possible? That's certainly my view, steam on the mainline gets more difficult as the years go on and that means that sometimes allowances have to be made such as a diesel on the back. It's not ideal but better than nothing at all IMO.

Was there a lineside fire on the way down? Where was that? I am surprised with all the recent rain.

A simple answer. The optimum load for the B1 is 9. 10 is the limit. Add a diesel and that demands a push to get going and on any gradients - even up to MP 31. Starting out of Woking, give the train a healthy shove 'up' to Oatlands and the diesel can just tick over for the rest of the journey to Waterloo apart from getting the train out of the way at Queenstown Road. There's no point in going on about it. It's just what happens.

Diesel was just ticking over when the train reached Esher just a few minutes later.

South Africa to South Dorset sounds a nice day trip! Well, at least the diesel will hopefully only be needed for the bit that it leads on.

Well she will be on the front of the train but that unusual looking "carriage" at the rear of the train will be making a noise;)

Well it wasn't paint that fell from the sky and turned my brown lawn green.

You must have your own private rain supply then! The only significant rain around here (Reading) in the last few months was on Friday 24th of July.
Other from that only a bit of drizzle or light showers.
    My lawn is still brown.

Portland has had almost no consistent rain either just the one downpour day. It is the regular weather (wet or dry) that makes the difference and recently it has been consistently dry. I've not been onto the heath around Winfrith recently but would bet on it being tinder dry.
